Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
Required Prior Study
Successful completion of GRA2733 Textile Practice Research Strategies and GRAP2731 Advanced Textile Materials, Techniques, Expressions.
AND
Required Concurrent Study
You should undertake GRAP2892 Textile Design Honours Research Project at the same time as this course as it contains areas of knowledge and skills which are implemented together in practice. Alternatively, you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course.
Course Description
In this course you will plan, undertake, and communicate a self-directed research project of your choice connected to your emerging design practice.
This course is taught alongside your studio course and will enable you to gain a deeper understanding of your emerging design practice and how it is positioned within social and cultural contexts. You will develop and apply research skills in ‘data’ gathering, reflective practice, analysis, and communication of research findings appropriate to fashion and textiles design. You will also be introduced to a range of creative practice research communication approaches. This course can provide a pathway to postgraduate research.
Please note that if you take this course for a bachelor honours program, your overall mark in this course will be one of the course marks that will be used to calculate the weighted average mark (WAM) that will determine your award level. See the WAM information web page for more information.

PLO8: Undertake research into contemporary textile design practice and theory to explore future industry and career directions.
Course Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
CLO1: Plan a self-directed creative practice research project.
CLO2: Undertake self-directed creative practice-based research project, applying appropriate research methods.
CLO3: Critically reflect on examples of creative practice research communication approaches for preparing a dissertation in relationship to your emerging practice.
CLO4: Effectively communicate the research as a dissertation or as a formal, academic presentation appropriate to the nature of the research project.
Overview of Learning Activities
Your learning will be facilitated via a range of in-class online activities and supervision meetings that will require both individual and collaborative engagement. Class activities promote your ability to explore design, investigate, analyse and understand textile design practice.
Overview of Learning Resources
RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.
A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.
RMIT Library provides extensive resources for fashion and textiles students. Search the library and consult the Fashion and Textiles Subject Guides for more information. The library also provides guides on academic referencing and assistance is available via phone, chat and email.
Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Assessment tasks are directly aligned with each Course Learning Outcome.
Assessment Tasks:
Assessment 1: Research project plan (20%), CLO 1
Assessment 2: Progress review (10%), CLOs 2 & 3
Assessment 3: Communication of research project (70%), CLOs 2, 3 & 4
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
If you have a long-term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or Equitable Learning Services if you would like to find out more.
