Course Description

In this course you will engage with a specified contemporary theme through either creative practice, curatorial or critical theoretical processes. Building on an initial framing, you will develop creative responses that evidence an expanded exploration of your topic.

You will have the opportunity to develop methodologies and outcomes in a form that is appropriate to your chosen interest and/or creative practice.

A different theme will be offered each semester. Possible themes might include contemporary figuration; feminisms; realisms; decolonialisation; post-humanism; abstraction; politics in art; hyper-reality; radical street art; public and private; gender and sexuality; land, landscape and place; contemporary portraiture; imaging and VR futures.

We have created two Themes in Contemporary Practice courses A & B. Each semester they are co-delivered. Two courses have been created so that you have the opportunity to explore two different themes over the course of your degree.

Overview of Learning Activities

This course will be delivered through a range of formats including seminars and studio activities (guided discussions, peer review and critique sessions) and lectures. You will benefit from discussions between the wider artist community across year levels and programs because the two courses Themes in Contemporary Art A & Themes in Contemporary Art B are co-delivered and shared with other postgraduate programs.

Overview of Assessment

In this course you can choose the area of focus and associated assessments that best suits your discipline or area of interest. Assessment tasks will either have a creative practice focus, a curatorial focus or an art history and theory focus. Choose one of the following groups of assessment tasks:

Creative Practice Focus

  1. Creative Project Outline 25% (Week 6) (LO1)
  2. Cont)extual presentation written, visual or audio 25% (LO2)
  3. Resolved Creative Project 50% (LO1, LO2, LO3)

OR

Curatorial Focus

  1. Curatorial outline 25% (Week 6) (LO1)
  2. Contextual presentation written, visual or audio 25% (LO2)
  3. Curatorial outcomes 50% (LO1, LO2, LO3)

OR

Critical theoretical Focus:

  1. Critical reflection, written/visual/audio 25% (Week 6) (LO1)
  2. Contextual presentation written, visual or audio 25% (LO2)
  3. A text-based creative response 50% (LO1, LO2, LO3)

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

Late submission or presentation of assessable work without an approved extension or special consideration will be penalised as follows:

  • Completed work submitted 1 to 7 days late will incur a penalty of 5% per day
  • Work submitted after day 7 will not be assessed
  • Weekends and holiday periods are included in the calculation of the late penalty

How the penalty is calculated:
Example - Work is submitted 6 days late, incurring a penalty of 30% (6 x 5% = 30%). The submission receives a result of 60 out of 100.  60 - 30% = 42. The numerical result for that assessment submission is modified from 60 to 42. The result of 42 is used to calculate the final grade for the course.
