Course Description

In a world that is rapidly evolving, new and exciting innovations are emerging, presenting both global opportunities and complex challenges. Nowhere is this more evident than in the health sector, where innovation has surged threefold over the past three years, transforming it into a multi-billion-dollar industry. This transformation demands 21st-century solutions, as the health industry evolves into a dynamic digital ecosystem. 

On a macro level, digital health is revolutionising the sector by reshaping funding models, system structures, and service provider networks. On a micro level, it is redefining care delivery and management models, placing the citizen at the heart of care, and shifting the focus from hospital-based treatment to wellness within the home and community. 

This course aims to explore the digital transformation of the health sector, examining digital health from a wide perspective that encompasses human, societal, and environmental considerations. Underpinned by a design thinking framework that is integrated across the curriculum, the course will encourage critique of how individual professions can collaborate to co-design integrated innovation within the complexity of the health sector.  

Central to this transformation is the use of data from diverse sources, which is crucial in the realm of digital health. Through engaging with simulated data, students will acquire essential skills in data handling and analysis, alongside learning to interpret the results effectively. This hands-on approach equips students with the tools they need to navigate and contribute to the ever-evolving digital health landscape.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

1. Explain the societal, cultural, economic and financial impacts of digital health transformation on the safe, effective and efficient health care and service delivery and business models. 

2. Examine the moral, social, legal, and ethical considerations in the experimentation, design, deployment, and evaluation of innovations for health and wellness. 

3. Analyse contemporary theory and practices relevant to the exploration, design, and deployment of digital health from a variety of discipline lenses. 

4. Co-design, using a design thinking approach, simulated innovative digital health solutions for real-world problems and consider their potential effectiveness. 

5. Analyse and interpret data from various sources within digital health context, and accurately evaluate/interpret the resulting outputs. 


Overview of Learning Activities

This course follows a modular structure. The course comprises four (4) modules. Modules vary in duration spanning two (2) to four (4) weeks. All modules are compulsory.

You’ll analyse the current theories and practices in the field of digital health. You’ll work both individually and collaboratively with your peers to analyse and solve real-world problems by designing innovative digital health solutions.

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course
