Course Description

This course will build your knowledge of the historical, cultural and societal impacts on health for First Nation Australians. You will explore the concept of culture, cultural awareness, sensitivity and applying a cultural proficiency framework for working with First Nations people.

You will investigate a range of contemporary Australian Indigenous Health issues and the impact of society and culture on  our First Nations people. Respectful and culturally appropriate communication and interactions will also be explored.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

1.Critically examine historical and cultural factors which contribute to the context of Indigenous Australian’s Health care problems.

2. Investigate, examine and apply a cultural proficiency framework for working with, and research about First Nations populations.

3. Appraise and articulate the impact of contemporary society and culture on the health of First Nation Australians.

4. Explicate the key health issues that Indigenous Australians experience in 21st century Australia.

5. Demonstrate cultural responsiveness and explain cultural awareness of all aspects of First Nation Health practices.    


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of online learning activities including  lectorials, seminars,  project work,  tutorials, and self-directed learning. The learning activities will be varied and may include recorded lectures and live video streaming to a first nation community.  You will also be able to work in individual and group activities to promote development of your theoretical knowledge and its application to culturally sensitive health care practice and cultural awareness.

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
