Course Description
In this course you will explore the importance of communication as a foundation to practice as a health professional. You will gain an understanding of the factors which impact on professional communication, including personal values and cultural factors, and be introduced to the concepts of professionalism, ethical practice, inter-professional collaborative practice, and digital literacy. The course will give you an understanding of the communication skills required for culturally safe and reflective practice as a future health professional and insight into how communication can be used to build more inclusive communities. You will explore the status of the Australian healthcare system and your role as an emerging professional that will support patient care, clinical and laboratory practice or supporting research.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe and compare the concepts of professionalism, ethical practice, cultural safety, academic integrity, inter-professional collaborative practice, and digital literacy in the context of the Australian healthcare system.
- Rationalise ethically sound decisions incorporating principles of ethical reasoning and codes of conduct
- Identify and demonstrate a range of communication skills and styles with consideration to relevant, diverse and culturally safe health practices.
- Reflect on and critically evaluate the range of personal factors which impacts your own personal communication style as a health and/or science professional to enhance your collaboration and communication skills for influence and impact.
Overview of Learning Activities
This course will use a range of learning activities including lectures and tutorial sessions, online resources and self-directed learning. Throughout the course you will work both individually and in teams. Delivery will be a combination of face-to-face and online.
You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through the RMIT Student Website.
Overview of Learning Resources
Resources such as prescribed and recommended texts available through the RMIT library eReserve, internet links to relevant information and links to relevant YouTube videos will support your understanding of topics.

Overview of Assessment
To pass this course you must achieve a minimum grade of 50%. Assessment marks will be added together across all submitted assessments and your final total mark must be equal to, or greater than 50%.
