Course Description

In this course, you will learn about the social, cultural, and environmental determinants of health and their impact on disadvantaged groups, with a focus on Indigenous Australians. You will learn principles of safe and high-quality health care delivery, and cultural sensitivity in all aspects of health care practice. You will also learn how contemporary society and its cultural and historical context contributes to health care problems experienced by disadvantaged groups and Indigenous Australians.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:  

  1. ​Describe and compare health status across local & wider Australian populations with reference to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples
  2. Explain the impact of history and contemporary society on the social, cultural, and environmental determinants of health, from the perspective of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples;
    3. Discuss key health issues that Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples experience in 21st century Australia;
    4. Identify cultural strengths and practices that contribute to wellbeing and healing among Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities;
    5. Describe local and national programs and initiatives  that are improving health outcomes in Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities;
    6. Outline your own professional plan in Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander cultural competence for your future health practice and research


Overview of Learning Activities

This course will use a range of learning activities including lectures and tutorial sessions, online resources, and self-directed learning. Throughout the course you will work both individually and in teams. Delivery will be a mix of face-to-face and online.  

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through the RMIT Student Website

Resources such as prescribed and recommended texts available through the RMIT library eReserve, internet links to relevant information and links to relevant YouTube videos will support your understanding of topics.
