Course Description
This course explores the scientific basis for the occurrence of infectious disease by applying that knowledge to the clinical situation. It aims to provide allied health practitioners with the ability to recognise infectious disease and communicate with health care professionals about the issues pertaining to susceptibility to disease and infection control.
You will study clinical microbiology using a body systems approach, with separate modules on immunology and nutrition. The study in this course will enable you to discuss and communicate issues pertaining to infectious disease and nutrition in an informed, compassionate, and professional manner to a diverse audience.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Program LearningOutcomes
This course contributes to the program learning outcomes for the following program(s):
BP231OST BachelorofBiomedicalScience (Osteopathy)
PLO 1: Apply a breadth and depth of biomedical science and osteopathy knowledge, concepts and evidence in various real-world settings using a scientific approach
PLO 2: Apply systematic thinking and a range of high-level analytical skills using a blend of digital and traditional tools and technologies to solve complex scientific and medical problems using a biomedical and osteopathy perspective
PLO 4: Communicate and collaborate on biomedical topics with diverse audiences utilising contemporary and traditional formats employing integrity, inclusivity and culturally safe practices
For more information on the program learning outcomes for your program, please see the program guide.
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
On successful completion of the course, you will be able to:
- Describe how immunity influences the outcome of an infectious disease.
- Discriminate possible infectious disease aetiology using simulated patient clinical signs and symptoms.
- Identify common microbiological scenarios within case presentations.
- Describe the interaction between nutrients (in food and at the level of the gut) and human physiology.
- Describe the connection between diet and health, and the mechanism of different nutrients which increase or decrease the risk of ‘diseases of Western Lifestyle’ (i.e. obesity, diabetes, type II diabetes, heart disease and some cancers).
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.
The learning activities in this course are designed to engage you actively in the learning process to aid the development of your theoretical knowledge and diagnostic imaging skills.
You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
Overview of Learning Resources
RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through myRMIT Studies Course. Resources such as prescribed and recommended texts are available through the RMIT library eReserve, internet links to relevant information and links to relevant YouTube videos will support your understanding of topics.
There are services available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services.
