Course Description
This course lays the foundations of practise for manual healthcare in Australia. During this course you will develop the introductory skills associated with palpatory literacy, knowledge of the surface anatomy of the musculoskeletal system and application of assessment and soft tissue techniques. You will develop the following professional skills within the 'routine primary healthcare consultation' setting: professional conduct, communication, ergonomics, assessment and palpation.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the program learning outcomes for the following program(s):
BP231OST Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Osteopathy)
PLO 1: Apply a breadth and depth of biomedical science knowledge, concepts and evidence in various real-world settings using a scientific approach
PLO 3: Demonstrate knowledge of the regulatory frameworks relevant to biomedical sciences and exhibit safe and ethical conduct
PLO 4: Communicate and collaborate on biomedical topics with diverse audiences utilising contemporary and traditional formats employing integrity, inclusivity and culturally safe practices
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the appropriate procedure to obtain informed consent from patients
- Demonstrate entry level clinical assessment skills for a manual therapist
- Articulate in both written and verbal formats, the tactile changes identified in connective tissues utilising medical terminology
- Integrate anatomical knowledge to the clinical skill of palpation.
- Apply safe and effective soft tissue technique in a simulated environment.
Overview of Learning Activities
This course will use a range of learning activities including recorded lectures, tutorials, practicals and self-directed learning. The learning activities in this course are designed to engage you actively in the learning process, to aid development of both theoretical knowledge and clinical practice skills. Throughout the course you will work both individually and in groups to solve problems involving aspects of anatomy and physiology covered in the course.
Recorded lectures are the principal mode of information delivery and will present you with the key concepts and theories relevant to the understanding of the core content.
Practicals and tutorials will support your understanding of, and familiarity with the physiology associated with the particular topics covered in the lectures. Practice learning activities will be provided in a variety of ways including simulated learning activities. There will also be the opportunity to discuss the practicals in relation to the underlying anatomical and physiological principles.
You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
Overview of Learning Resources
The learning resources associated with this course will include targeted readings taken from a range of both primary and secondary sources.
Recorded lectures and on-line material: The lectures and reading material provided digitally available to you. You are encouraged to engage in wider reading to provide an opportunity to expand your focus on specific details, complex areas and life examples.
RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through myRMIT Studies Course.
There are services available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal
Overview of Assessment
AssessmentTasks
This course contains hurdle requirements. All hurdle requirements for this course are indicated clearly in the assessment regime that follows, against the relevant assessment task(s) and all have been approved by the College Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Learning, Teaching and Quality).
A hurdle requirement is necessary in order to demonstrate to the accrediting body that students are competent and are being sufficiently assessed against practice-focused professional standards throughout the course of their program.
Assessment Task 1: Manual handling, communication and safety - written assessment and reflection
Weighting 35%
This assessment task supports CLOs 1, 2, 3, and 6
Assessment Task 2: Intra-semester Practical Assessment
Weighting 25%
This assessment task supports CLO 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5
Assessment Task 3: End-of-semester Practical Assessment (Hurdle Requirement)
Weighting 40%
This assessment task supports CLOs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6
Students must achieve 50% overall and achieve a pass in the hurdle assessment to pass the course.
If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or EquitableLearning Services if you would like to find out more.
