No pre-requisites. Students who have previously completed ENVI1103 - Social Planning should not enrol in ARCH3342.
Course Description
Working with communities and being aware of community interests is central to spatial and social planning. Such engagement includes formalised techniques and approaches, but also planned interventions that integrate social, cultural, spatial and environmental contexts. In this course you will explore how to interpret social contexts and their dynamics, the basis of community engagement in planning practice, as well as the application of specific techniques for working with communities on spatial planning issues that recognise diverse needs and interests.

Program Learning Outcomes
In this course you will develop the following Program Learning Outcomes:
PLO1: Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving urban and regional problems in diverse contexts and assessing implications of decisions and actions
PLO4: Communicate ideas using diverse formats and strategies to academic and professional audiences within and external to the discipline of urban and regional planning.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Critically discuss engaging communities in urban and regional planning processes and the historical and contemporary perspectives of this approach;
2. Identify key theoretical and conceptual approaches to working with communities in urban and regional planning;
3. Apply and critique established and emerging techniques and examples of engagement with communities in significant contemporary planning issues and processes;
4. Collect data from a variety of sources and analyse it from a community planning perspective.

You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of face to face and online activities such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, readings, field trips, group activities and individual research.

Assessment Task 1: Tutorial Engagement, 20%, CLO1, CLO2 and CLO3Assessment Task 2: Reflective Skills Report, 2,000 words, 40%, CLO1, CLO3 and CLO4
