Course Description
This course will introduce you to the fundamental principles and science of remote sensing. The course covers the basic concepts of electromagnetic radiation and its detection using remote sensing devices (active and passive). A typical satellite-based, passive remote sensing system will be explored in detail and as well as several common remote sensing applications. Basic image processing for natural resource assessments will also be explored via a series of practical classes.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the development of the following Program Learning Outcomes in MC265 Master of Geospatial Science:
1.3 Identify and elaborate specialist bodies of knowledge in geospatial science.
2.1 Apply standard and advanced techniques to solve a range of measurement and data management problems.
2.2 Proficiently perform computations in two and three dimensions.
3.2 Interpret and critically analyse results and make informed judgements on the appropriateness of solutions.
3.3 Apply critical and analytical skills in a scientific and professional manner.
On completion of this course you should be able to:
- Explain the way in which electromagnetic radiation interacts with the earth’s atmosphere, the earth’s surface and the remote sensing system
- List and describe the different types of sensors that are used to detect and record certain parts of the electromagnetic spectrum
- Define the four fundamental resolutions of remote sensing and describe their interaction
- Define and critically analyse spectral signatures and feature space plots
- Analyse and interpret remotely sensed images
- Extract and analyse spectral signatures and image classifications.

Learning will occur through a series of lectorials, lab discussions, assignments, online and in-class assessments.
Overview of Learning Resources
You will be able to access a learning guide, course information and supplementary learning materials through Canvas LMS and be provided with copies of additional materials in class. Lists of relevant references, resources in the library and freely accessible Internet sites will be provided. Students will also use laboratory equipment and computer software within the School during tutorial and assignment work.
There are no prescribed texts for this course. A recommended reading list will be provided.
