Course Description

In this course you will develop the skills and knowledge required for oral transfer, the primary competency of the professional interpreter. You will also develop the ability to apply relevant contextual and pragmatic knowledge required of interpreting assignments.  

You will be introduced to a range of specific interpreting techniques, such as conversation turn-taking and its dynamics, note-taking for consecutive interpreting, sight translation and whispered simultaneous interpreting.  

You will learn how to identify and employ cohesion and intonation patterns applicable to oral communication.  

Upon the completion of this test, you will be eligible to sit the Provisionally Certified Interpreting test administered by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

If you are taking this course as an option course or as part of a minor, this course will complement the learning outcomes you are developing in your program.  


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: 

  1. Interpret in dialogue (liaison) mode.  
  2. Analyse the contextual framework, terminology and dynamics of communication settings in interpreting.  
  3. Apply memory, comprehension and note-taking skills  
  4. Apply sight translation and whispered simultaneous skills.  
  5. Critically reflect on your own practice to identify challenges and develop ethical solutions.   


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities including lectures tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and individual research. Activities may be delivered face-to-face, online, or a mix of both.  
  

Online classes will be devoted to:  

  1. interpreting in the various modes of professional practice - dialogue, consecutive, simultaneous and sight translation  
  2. discussing the contextual issues surrounding interpreting in particular domains and  
  3. linking interpreting exercises to the theoretical perspectives examined in other parts of the program. 


Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.   
  
The Translating & Interpreting program has developed extensive resources in interpreting including digital dialogue and consecutive interpreting passages which will be used as a basis of interpreting practice. Staff are practising interpreters who bring their own experience and examples of professional interpreting situations to the course.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
