Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to identify children and young people who are at risk and report in line with legislative requirements. This work occurs within legislative and policy frameworks and carries a duty of care responsibility.

This unit applies to workers in a range of job roles providing services to children and young people including in community services and health contexts.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

Elements:

1.1. Observe signs and indicators to identify children, families and young people at risk of domestic violence, abuse and neglect. 1.2. Collect information and document signs and indicators of abuse in accordance with legislative requirements and organisational policies and procedures. 1.3. Use communication and information gathering techniques with children and young people according to organisational policies and procedures.

2.1. Ensure documentation in person's record is completed accurately, in a detailed and factual manner, according to organisational policies and procedures for privacy and confidentiality. 2.2. Report risk of harm indicators, using the relevant reporting mechanism in accordance with legislative requirements.

3.1. Recognise and uphold the rights of children and young people in the provision of services. 3.2. Employ ethical practices and observe professional boundaries when working with children and young people. 3.3. Recognise and report indicators for ethical concerns when working with children and young people.

Overview of Assessment

This course is delivered and assessed in a cluster with; 

CHCYTH014- Work effectively with young people in the youth work context

CHCYTH013- Engage respectfully with young people

Students are given two (2) attempts for each assessment to demonstrate the required skills. A third (3rd) attempt can only be offered after discussions between teacher and the Program Coordinator and is not automatic. Resubmissions beyond two (2) attempts are at the discretion of the teacher and/or coordinator.
