Join the rapidly expanding area of biotechnology.

In this clinical microbiology program you'll study molecular biology and immunology, molecular pathogenesis of human and animal infections, and diagnosis of major microbial infections including molecular techniques for rapid diagnosis.

Special emphasis is placed on the application of new technologies to solve problems like development of new diagnostic tests and vaccines.

You'll develop skills in critical evaluation of scientific literature and oral and written communication in biotechnology.

Duration

2 years full-time or 4 years part-time.

Learning and teaching

RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, seminars, studios, workshops, presentations, group discussions and syndicate work. These are primarily in English. You will have access to online resources through the myRMIT student portal.

Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, oral classes, presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects and practical assignments.

Program structure

The Master consists of 192 credit points. This incorporates the Graduate Diploma (96 credit points).

High-achieving students can do either 1 semester of full-time research or work experience in Year 2 of the degree.

Graduates are employed in private industry (e.g., producing vaccines), in medical research institutes, universities and hospitals as research staff, or in diagnostic microbiology.

Entry requirements

You must meet the University entry requirements for this type of program.

If you satisfy the following requirements you will be eligible for selection; however, there is no guarantee that you will be selected as demand for the program varies each intake.

Program entry requirements

An Australian bachelor degree with a GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0 in Biological Sciences, Food Science/Technology, Biotechnology, Medicine, Veterinary Science, Dentistry, Agricultural Science or Chemical Engineering, or equivalent; and successful completion of a Chemistry or Biochemistry course in a bachelor degree, or equivalent.

International qualifications are assessed according to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).

If you have not successfully completed a microbiology course at undergraduate level, or an equivalent, you will be required to enrol in second year microbiology during your first semester.

Credit points from the second year microbiology will not count towards the completion of the program.

How to apply

Fees

Tuition fees vary according to each program and are adjusted annually.

There are 2 tuition fee types:

  • full fees where you will be responsible for the full cost
  • Commonwealth supported place (CSP) fees where your tuition fee is shared between you and the Commonwealth Government if you meet the eligibility criteria. There are only a small number of CSPs available.

Fee assistance

As a full fee-paying student, you may be eligible to apply for the optional FEE-HELP loan scheme to assist you to pay all or part of your tuition fees.

As a Commonwealth supported student, you may be able to either:

  • pay all or part of your student contribution up front and receive a 10% discount, or
  • defer payment through the HECS-HELP loan scheme.

Other fees

In addition to tuition fees you will also pay the Student services and amenities fee (SSAF). You may be able to defer the fee through the SA-HELP loan scheme.

There may be other additional expenses and administrative fees associated with your studies.

Pathways

Relevant work experience at an appropriate level and duration is recognised as an equivalent to 1 full-time semester or 1 part-time year.

Applications for recognition of work experience are assessed on an individual basis.

If you've completed a Graduate Diploma in Biotechnology at another institution you may receive up to 96 credit points towards the Master of Biotechnology, depending on the equivalence of courses.
