Document Delivery Services

Access items from our off-site storage and resources held outside of RMIT University Library collections.

Document Delivery option is available from the main menu in LibrarySearch.

How to request document delivery

  1. Log in to LibrarySearch
  2. Look for the Document Delivery link in the LibrarySearch top menu.

Request document delivery if you:

  • cannot locate items in our Library collections and need to get them from other places
  • need a copy of an article or book chapter from another Library site at RMIT
  • need a copy of a journal article or journal loan from our off-site storage, CARM2 (CAVAL Archival and Research Materials Centre)
  • are a remote student within Australia and need items posted to you
  • are a student or staff member outside Australia and need a copy of an article or book chapter.

To check or cancel your request, log in to My Library Account and select 'Requests' option.

  • RMIT Vietnam-based students and staff can request chapter copies and journal articles. Staff can also request postal loans via courier of RMIT University books.

  • Journals from our off-site storage facility at CAVAL Archival and Research Materials Centre (CARM2)
  • Purchase of theses and other items not available for loan can be arranged. Payment must be authorised by the requestor prior to orders being placed.

The Library pays other libraries for items received with the expenditure deducted from the Library budget.

Occasionally items are expensive to obtain and we will ask you to contribute to the cost. We will only proceed after receiving advice from you.

  • Cross campus copies: 3-5 days
  • Copies from other libraries: 3-5 days
  • Copies of journals, loans of journals from off-site storage: 2 - 4 days
  • Loans from other libraries: 1-2 weeks
  • Overseas loans: 2-4 weeks
  • Postal loans for remote students: 5 days

Turnaround time depends on a variety of factors including accuracy of details provided, the supplier availability and the time spent in transit.

Interlibrary loans and postal loans are not available to students and staff residing overseas (offshore).

This service is for RMIT University students in Australia, including RMIT Online students, who reside outside Met Zone 2, or in states other than Victoria.

Articles or book chapters

Copies of journal articles, conference papers and book chapters will be delivered electronically to your desktop. Log in to LibrarySearch and select the Document Delivery link in the top menu to make a request.

Books

If you need books, we will post them to you for free. We will also send you a prepaid satchel with the Library’s address. Please use this satchel to return your books to the Library.

Alternatively, you can pick up and return books in person from the Library site specified on your request.

We aim for a one-week turnaround time for all loans; however this may not always be possible.

Loan period and renewals

The initial loan period for remote students is 4 weeks, and then normal loan periods apply. Renewals are automatic and we will let you know if your loans can no longer be renewed and must be returned.

Please remember that it is your responsibility to return materials by the due date. Penalties apply for overdue or lost items.

Borrowing from other libraries

The CAVAL Reciprocal Borrowing Program allows you to borrow items from other Victorian academic libraries. Obtain your CAVAL card and information brochure from any of the Library sites. The National Borrowing Scheme allows RMIT students living anywhere in Australia to borrow items from participating universities in their home state. RMIT University provides an interlibrary loan and document delivery service to Australian and overseas libraries.

RMIT adheres to the Australian Interlibrary Loan Resource Sharing Code which specifies standards for delivery of material between libraries and costs.
