RMIT strengthens education ties in Vietnam to upskill workers

RMIT has partnered with software company TMA Solutions to develop workforce skills training and bolster the growth of a ‘Vietnamese Silicon Valley’.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlines three areas where RMIT and TMA Solutions aim to establish closer links: 

  • Cooperation on developing workforce skills training including development of a skills training program in IT 

  • Exploration of opportunities for funding from government and industry to support workforce skills training 

  • Research collaboration  

The MoU was signed by RMIT Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Vocational Education) and Vice-President, Mish Eastman, and General Manager of TMA Solutions, Dr Bui Duc Quang, in Vietnam this past week.

Eastman said RMIT’s commitment in Vietnam was to support people and communities to adapt and thrive across generations through education, skills development, research and civic engagement.   

“We are closely connected with our teams across the region and beyond, bringing international perspectives and insights to students and partners alike.”  

“Our goal is to contribute to supporting citizens operating in a global environment with a keen sense of commitment to Vietnam, to the region and to the world.”  

Headquartered in Vietnam and with offices globally, TMA Solutions provides software outsourcing services to leading companies around the world.  

TMA Chairman, Dr Le Nguyen, said the partnership would contribute to Binh Dinh province's vision of building 'Vietnam Silicon Valley. 

"RMIT and TMA's game-changing partnership, will work together to pilot a new approach to develop high quality tech workforce under the "Earn-and-Learn" model, to firstly address the need of TMA, and in the long run to contribute to Binh Dinh province's vision of building 'Vietnam Silicon Valley,” he said. 

The MoU is just the latest in a series of initiatives from RMIT’s College of Vocational Education’s (CoVE) to strengthen its skills training in Vietnam and South-East Asia.   

In country digital training  

While in-country, the RMIT delegation also co-delivered a two-week intensive training program in Ho Chi Minh City to upskill workers in digital literacy and innovation as part of the Aus4Skills program.  

Aus4Skills supports Vietnam to access high-level professional technical knowledge and skills to contribute to sustainable socio-economic development.

The training follows a workforce training program delivered to 37 participants in Vietnam’s Hai Phong region in March 2023 and designed to boost the productivity and effectiveness of management in Vietnam’s logistics workforce.  

The program was part of partnership between RMIT, Sao Do Group, Hai Phong Logistics Association and Hai Phong Economic Zone Authority.  

Country commitment continued  

While in Vietnam, in the presence of Australia’s Prime Minister, the Honourable Anthony Albanese MP, RMIT also announced the next phase of its Country Commitment to Vietnam, including an AUD $250 million strategic investment fund. 

The fund will see RMIT invest in education, research, partnerships and campus infrastructure, as Vietnam’s leading international university, contributing to the country’s social and economic goals.
