RMIT receives citation as top employer for gender equality

For the sixth consecutive year, RMIT has been awarded the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) Employer of Choice citation.

The sought-after recognition underscores the University’s  commitment to fostering a gender equal workplace and the creation of an inclusive culture where all staff and students can thrive.

The WGEA Employer of Choice 2023-25 citation  was granted to 115 organisations that demonstrated exceptional workplace gender equality practices and outcomes.

The University met requirements across areas such as workforce gender balance, pay equity, flexible work and preventing gender-based violence.

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Alec Cameron expressed his pride in the achievement.

"RMIT has been part of the WGEA Employer of Choice citation for 15 years now and this year’s recognition reflects our sustained efforts to champion gender equality and support our diverse community, he said.

“RMIT is committed to building a workplace with a strong sense of belonging, where every individual feels valued and empowered to achieve their best."

Interim Chief People Officer Gaynor Witts emphasised the importance of continued progress in gender equality.

"This year’s citation is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire community,” Witts said.

“We have made significant strides in promoting gender equality, but our journey does not end here.

“We will continue to strive for excellence in creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all our staff."

The University has made significant progress across a range of gender equality initiatives in the past year,  including:

  • Implementing the Sustainability Equity Evaluation (SEE) Tool, ensuring universal design approaches in our policy, process and procedure development and review;

  • Targeting recruitment in areas of underrepresentation, then analysing hiring trends to provide insights on the impact on our pay gap.

  • Athena SWAN Pathway to Silver Award Accreditation with individual Cygnet Awards, including supporting the experience and career progression of those with parent and caring responsibilities.
