Moves to strengthen higher education integrity welcome, but well-balanced policy decisions needed

RMIT University responds to the draft International Education and Skills Strategic Framework.

The Federal Government recently announced plans to introduce legislation that will place caps on the number of international students studying at Australia’s higher education institutions.

RMIT will continue our long-standing partnership working alongside government in policy solutions. We have made a submission in response to the draft International Education and Skills Strategic Framework.

We are conscious that we have not yet returned to pre-pandemic international student numbers and it’s important that we remain on the critical path to reduce deficits and restore financial stability.

We are calling that the government’s reforms support sustainable growth and that the implementation of any future policies do not generate system complexities that limit our progress and inadvertently damage Australia’s international reputation.

Our full submission outlines the following key points: 

  • RMIT supports moves to strengthen the quality and integrity of Australia’s higher education sector.
  • RMIT advocates for the importance of transnational education and the valuable contribution it makes locally, regionally and internationally.
  • RMIT urges well-balanced policy decisions with implementation plans that prioritise the experience of prospective international students and maintain Australia’s brand as a high-quality destination for international education.
