RMIT and Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) announce dual degree partnership for civil engineering students

A new strategic collaboration with UPM will allow students to enrich their academic experience in an international environment.

RMIT and the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) have entered into an agreement that will enable civil engineering students to earn dual degrees endorsed by both universities.

The partnership marks a new milestone in academic cooperation between Spain and Australia, with the potential to give graduates a decisive competitive edge in the global civil engineering industry.

The agreement was signed in Madrid by UPM's Rector Guillermo Cisneros and RMIT Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Alec Cameron, alongside other senior university representatives from UPM and RMIT Europe.

With the signing of the MoU, UPM Master’s students now have a pathway to complete a part of their degree in Melbourne as part of RMIT’s Master of Engineering (Civil Engineering).

Upon completion, students will earn two master's degrees, one from UPM and another from RMIT, broadening their international qualifications to help them meet global industry standards.

This new agreement will enhance career prospects for the UPM Master’s students as they will be able to gain access to professional accreditations in more than one country.

RMIT Professor Alec Cameron, Vice-Chancellor and President, stated that the program reflected the growing demand for engineers who can navigate the requirements of a globalised world and who have practical experience from different cultural and professional contexts.

“This partnership reflects the growing importance of – and RMIT’s commitment to – developing international collaborations that shape the future of education,” Cameron said.

“The next generation of engineers needs broader skills, knowledge and experiences to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

"By creating this bridge between our two leading institutions, we are opening up new opportunities for students to experience diverse academic environments."

UPM Rector Guillermo Cisneros also highlighted the transformative impact the partnership would have on students’ futures.

“Today we reaffirm our commitment to opening new horizons for our students, offering them international education that will enable them to play a leading role on the global stage,” Cisneros said.

“This collaboration will not only enhance their education but also open doors to a future full of opportunities.”

Aside from pure academic collaboration, the strategic partnership will also bring about opportunities for international mobility, joint research and enhanced academic supervision between the two institutions.

It represents another step forward in expanding the international impact of RMIT and strengthening its links with prestigious institutions throughout the world.

For students aspiring to make their mark on the global stage, the partnership presents a unique opportunity to gain qualifications that transcend borders and open up new professional avenues.

RMIT and UPM are expected to finalise and launch the program in the coming months.

RMIT is deeply committed to transnational education and the valuable contribution it makes locally, regionally and internationally.

The University is proud of the relationships it builds with partners and remains focused on the long-term impact these partnerships can deliver to each institution and most importantly to RMIT students.
