RMIT partners with London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham to boost cross-border tech innovation

The new agreement will connect the White City and Melbourne Innovation Districts to create new opportunities and strengthen economic growth.

RMIT University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham aimed at encouraging urban innovation, academic collaboration, and economic development.

The MoU connects the Melbourne Innovation Districts, a partnership between RMIT, the City of Melbourne and the University of Melbourne, with the White City Innovation District, strengthening the two innovation ecosystems in a shared mission to build sustainable and prosperous urban environments.

The agreement adds another dimension to RMIT’s global network, reinforcing the university’s strategy of collaborating with leading institutions and innovation districts around the world.

The partnership between RMIT and the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham reinforces a shared commitment to urban innovation, and will allow RMIT to use its expertise in translational research and industry engagement to help address key challenges.

Professor Alec Cameron, RMIT Vice-Chancellor and President, said the collaboration aligned with the University's purpose to make a tangible, positive social impact that genuinely benefits the communities and cities in which it is located.

“This partnership will help us shape our landscape in a way that can help drive innovation and act as a social engine,” Cameron said.

“RMIT offers a range of pathways into different careers outside of traditional university courses.

"We’ve been working with the City of Melbourne and want to get industry partners and local leaders onboard.

“It’s exciting to think about how our districts can complement each other to unlock opportunities on both sides of the globe to help bridge the economic divide.”

The White City Innovation District is underpinned by the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham’s industrial strategy, Economic Growth for Everyone, and Imperial College London White City Campus.

It is a key part of the borough's ambitious industrial strategy, created to drive growth and innovation across life sciences, climate technologies and the creative industries.

It has rapidly evolved into a hub for cutting-edge innovation, housing a diverse mix of businesses, research institutions and start-ups.

Hammersmith & Fulham Leader, Councillor Stephen Cowan, said the alliance of international leaders with a shared vision was an opportunity to grow their respective economies and make them more inclusive for the benefit of all.

"The idea is that everybody should have a pathway to progress – the question is how to overcome inequalities," Cowan said.

"We have some of the answers here in Hammersmith & Fulham, but we can’t do it alone.

"I’m excited for us to learn together (with RMIT) – from our successes and failures – and to do something special that shapes the rest of the century.”

As an applied institution with strong industry ties, RMIT is expected to provide valuable support in the future to accelerate the innovation district’s mission of driving economic growth and improving the quality of life for its surrounding communities.
