Building global mindsets in students through industry partnered learning with European experts

Created by Dr Nuttawuth Muenjohn in collaboration with RMIT Europe, the ‘Global Industry Mindsets on Contemporary Leadership’ initiative sees students exposed to global perspectives and knowledge through insights from the European industry, creating an impactful experience for current and future students.

In an ever-changing international landscape, building a global mindset has become paramount for students aspiring to thrive in the diverse and interconnected working world.

Through experiences facilitated by RMIT Europe, students can gain a global mindset by way of global industry experiences where they can expand their awareness and attitudes to the diversity presented in today’s working world, developing essential skills and perspectives to work successfully with cultural intelligence.

One of RMIT Europe's commitments is to connect students with the European industry and alumni through guest lectures, internships, projects, mentoring, study tours and more, allowing them to experience broadened knowledge and perspectives.

RMIT Europe’s impacts can extend to a large population of students through creating and documenting global industry experiences or insights in various forms and embedding them into courses and programs to be delivered locally.

Expanding students' perspectives on leadership with international expert insights

A success story to come from these efforts was the ‘Global Industry Mindsets on Contemporary Leadership’ initiative, a collaboration between Dr Nuttawuth Muenjohn from RMIT University’s College of Business and Law and RMIT Europe.

This initiative consisted of recorded guest lectures featuring discussions between Nuttawuth and a range of prominent business leaders in Spain, the UK and Germany.

Experts in the series included:

  • Professor Alan Montague, RMIT University

  • Amber Williamson, CEO of Digital Willow and RMIT alumni

  • Björn Jahncke, Aviation Consultant at Lufthansa Systems

  • Atish Gonsalves, Founder of Gamoteca

  • Dr Daria Tataj, co-Founder of the Network Intelligence Academy and Chair or EIT Culture & Creativity.

These lectures looked specifically at how a global mindset can influence the practice of leadership and leadership effectiveness from the perspective of the various industry guests.

Nuttawuth aimed to convey to his students, through the credibility of the industry partners, how exhibiting a global mindset can influence leadership practice and how global leadership skills contribute to overall leadership effectiveness.

“I wanted to improve the students’ appreciation of the connection between successful leadership and global perspectives, combined with an excellent opportunity to connect to the industry and prepare themselves as graduates ready for life and work,” he said.

The impacts of this project were recognised at the RMIT University 2021 College of Business and Law Learning and Teaching awards where it was awarded the ‘Local, National and Global’ award.

RMIT educators can collaborate with RMIT Europe to deliver industry partnered learning (IPL) to their students, and technology can easily adjust these collaborations to be scalable and accessible to a large population of students.

Gaining insights into their study area on an international scale from the experiences RMIT Europe offers are important learnings students gain during their studies and will ultimately contribute to their personal and professional development.

In alignment with RMIT’s aspirations for the future of education, IPL will continue to play a key role in all programs across the University and is a key component of the curriculum architecture. RMIT Europe's commitment to facilitating IPL lends itself to assisting educators in enabling this.
