Moving forward after the Voice Referendum outcome

RMIT affirms its commitment to First Nations People and encourages everyone in the University community to reflect and continue to engage with the important conversations taking place.

RMIT took a position of neutrality in relation to the referendum question, to prioritise our commitment to democracy, to community, and to advancing Responsible Practice under any circumstances. 

We know that different people reached their own conclusions about the referendum, and we respect their decision and the outcome.

RMIT’s commitment to the participation and success of First Nations people is unwavering, and our responsibilities to show care and respect to each other are the same this week, and every week, as they were last week. 

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are not the embodiment of the question put to the Australian electorate during the referendum.  

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the embodiment of country, and their knowledge, culture and relationships underpin our existence here. 

Through our commitments to Responsible Practice that are embedded in RMIT’s Knowledge with Action strategy, through to 2031 we are actively committed to supporting Indigenous student success, employment and career development, excellence in research and innovation, and place-based, community partnership which celebrates Indigenous heritage and shared identity.  

We know this is a challenging time for some people across the University, particularly our Indigenous students and staff.
