Inspiring Student Achievements Honoured at 2024 Vocational Education Awards

RMIT’s Vocational Education Student Awards celebrated top VE achievers of 2024.

Earlier in the month RMIT hosted its inaugural Vocational Education Student Awards at Storey Hall in Melbourne. This landmark event united students from across all VE streams to honor RMIT’s top achievers of 2024.

VE Student of the Year Award – Akwal Magek, Certificate IV in Youth Work

Akwal Magek, the winner of RMIT's VE Student of the Year Award, exemplifies resilience and dedication in the social services sector.

Akwal has demonstrated unwavering dedication to empowering young people which has earned her the prestigious recognition as this year's College of VE Standout Student. Through her studies in Youth Work at RMIT and impactful roles at Cohealth Arts Generator, Western Edge Youth Arts, and the Centre for Multicultural Youth, she has fostered inclusive spaces that amplify youth voices and promote creativity. 

Her lived experiences have shaped her empathetic approach to community work, making her a role model for others.

“Akwal’s determination and ability to turn adversity into an opportunity to support others is inspiring,” shared Joseph Osimobi, an RMIT teacher and Akwal’s nominator for the award.

“She embodies the values of compassion and leadership that are crucial in the social services sector.”

Her journey highlights the transformative power of education and her unwavering passion for creating meaningful change. 

Indigenous Student of the Year Award – Cara Pieter-Marie Smith, Diploma of Graphic Design 

na Cara's creative process involved Indigenous design and symbols, merging traditional elements with modern aesthetics to create visually engaging and culturally respectful playing and flashcards.

Cara has excelled in her Diploma of Graphic Design, showcasing creativity and dedication in her work. Her innovative approach and strong design skills have set her apart as a standout student.

Drawing from her family’s artistic roots and her passion for Indigenous design, she operates a home-based business creating bespoke, hand-crafted products and accepting design commissions.

This recognition has allowed me to showcase my contributions to educating others about Indigenous traditions. It has also helped advance my possible career in Indigenous design and graphic design, and I hope to find a mentor in the Indigenous design community to support my growth. 

During her studies, Cara has stood out for her leadership and exceptional work, contributing to industry-partnered projects and designing standout creative pieces like a custom playing card deck. Her ability to thrive academically while sharing her insights with peers highlights her dedication and the impact of her journey at RMIT.

Industry Excellence Award Winner, Georgia Williams, Dual Diploma of Business, Diploma of Leadership and Management

Georgia transitioned from a seven-year career in early childhood education to excel in the business and leadership space. Known for her exceptional academic results, punctuality, and mentorship to peers, Georgia stands out for her collegiality and active class participation. 

Looking ahead, this recognition fuels my motivation to keep pushing boundaries and setting higher goals. 

“Next year, I am excited to begin studying my Bachelor in Digital and Social Media, which will provide the skills and knowledge to help me launch my new and upcoming podcast,” shared Georgia. 

“Additionally, I will be pursuing my Master’s in Sports Analytics, a field that aligns with my passion for sports and my desire to contribute to data-driven decision-making in the industry.”

Her ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical placements highlights her as a once-in-a-generation talent, embodying the very best of what it means to be an exemplary VE student.

Apprentice of the Year, Certificate III - Rachel Briggs, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration

Throughout her apprenticeship with Woolworths, Rachel impressed with her academic excellence, proactive on-site learning, and commitment to supporting her peers. 

“Winning any award is always a great encouragement,” shared Rachel. 

“I really appreciate the sentiment, and the fact people went to the effort of nominating me. I'm thankful for the people who are always cheering me on.”

Beyond her technical achievements, she inspired the next generation of tradespeople through her involvement in the Trades Fit Expos, where she encouraged young women, non-binary, and transgender students to consider careers in refrigeration.  

“Her ability to excel in her studies, proactive approach to learning on the job, and dedication to inspiring the next generation exemplify the qualities of a top apprentice,” shared Joshua Seymour, Rachel’s Program Coordinator.
