Success Through Leadership: Graduate Mun Wai Inspires Peers Through Mentorship

Looi Mun Wai will soon graduate after an impressive university journey, profoundly shaped by his involvement in RMIT’s Peer Mentoring Program.

After being exposed to psychology during high school, Mun Wai decided to enrol in a Bachelor of Applied Science (Psychology) at RMIT.

He was drawn into the field by its influence on world views and lifestyles, and said that it aligned closely with his beliefs.

“I’m naturally a curious person who loves to question or explore the philosophy of life and how it functions other than the factor of coincidence and luck,” he said.

"This field not only serves me professionally but deepens my life-long process of attaining self-mastery for living a peaceful life.”

Becoming a Mentor

Mun Wai has spent the past two years of his degree helping students navigate university life as part of the Peer Mentoring program, and experience which not only enriched his academic experience but also sparked a passion for leadership and personal growth.

“From the first day I felt grateful that I was selected by the Peer Mentoring team to be part of this opportunity,”

“To spread joy and knowledge by helping peers and new students to effectively navigate around their times during their degree and the campus itself.”

The experience gave Mun Wai inspiration to seek further unique opportunities outside of the classroom, opening the door to many other opportunities.

“Volunteering as a mentor has given me a vision and inspired my drive to seek experiences beyond the classroom that helped me gain invaluable skills and ability in broadening my scope in building professional networks and culturally diverse friends.”

Stepping Into New Environments

Mun Wai said that his university experiences has empowered him to become bold, stepping into new environments and embracing challenges on his own.

“This has sparked my ambition to define my story as a student adventuring my way throughout the duration of my degree, actively seeking new challenges to tackle and conquer.”

“I secured not one but two internship opportunities before graduation,” he said.

These experiences have fueled my ambition to shape my story as a student, constantly seeking new challenges to overcome and grow from.

As Mun Wai prepares to embark on the next phase of his career, he said his internship experience will provide valuable experience and is open to every possibility after he graduates.

“My current internship with the RMIT Research and Innovation Team, combined with my upcoming internship at VTAC will provide valuable, hands-on experience to strengthen my professional portfolio,” he said.

“I aim to explore every opportunity that I encounter during life after university."

“I strongly believe in never limiting one’s ambitions to strive for having a settled mindset, as the world is as big as you imagine and as small as you believe.”
