On Wednesday 7 May, we mark National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day, honouring those who have lost their lives to domestic and family violence and standing in solidarity with survivors.
To raise awareness of the impact of domestic and family violence, RMIT’s Building 13 (Emily McPherson Buidling) at 405 Russell St will be lit up in purple on the evening of Wednesday 7 May.
This is part of the Safe Steps Candlelight Vigil led by courageous survivors and passionate advocates to raise awareness by providing a platform for sharing stories of resilience, sparking hope, and inspiring change.
Safe Steps provides 24/7 specialist support for anyone in Victoria experiencing or fearing family violence. RMIT staff and students can also seek support with matters relating to gender-based violence and other concerning behaviours from RMIT’s Safer Community.

RMIT updates gender-based violence policy
RMIT has strengthened its gender-based violence (GBV) policies (formerly Sexual Harm Response Policy) to align with national reforms, sector expectations and obligations, and the needs of our community.
The updated policies cover all forms of gender-based violence, including sexual assault, sexual harm, and domestic and family violence.
To find the policies, search for ‘Gender-Based Violence’ and ‘Domestic and Family Violence’ on the RMIT Policy Register.
A trauma-informed, safety-first approach underpins our response to disclosures and investigations, with a new GBV Specialist Investigator role and clear reporting processes in place.
Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month
May is also Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, an opportunity to raise awareness, show support for those affected, and work towards a future free from violence. Let’s all play a part in creating a safer, more respectful community, at RMIT and beyond.
