Current students can choose to provide consent for RMIT University to discuss select administrative matters with a third party individual.
Ordinarily, RMIT University cannot discuss any administrative matters that pertain to a student aged 18+ with anyone apart from the student themself.
However, a student over the age of 18 can choose to grant someone else ‘third party consent’.
Providing third party consent means you are providing consent for RMIT University to discuss select administrative matters with a third party individual, usually a parent or other relative.
Information will only be shared with the third party individual if they contact RMIT University directly; RMIT will not send emails, invoices or other communications to the third party.
Third party consent arrangements are intended for students who are currently enrolled in a program at RMIT. Students can only nominate a single person to grant third party consent – consent cannot be provided for multiple people.
If a third party consent arrangement is in place, RMIT University can discuss the following administrative matters with the nominated third party individual:
RMIT University will NOT discuss any other matters with the third party, including the student’s academic progress, grades or academic advice.
A third party cannot make administrative changes or updates on behalf of a student, including enrolment and timetabling changes.
A third party consent arrangement does not give the third party any right to:
RMIT will NOT send the third party individual emails or communications about administrative matters.
As stated in the Statement of Student Responsibilities, RMIT will send communications to the student's RMIT student email, personal email, mailing address or phone. It is the student’s responsibility to regularly check and read all University messages. This does not change, even if a third party consent arrangement is in place.
A third party consent arrangement simply means that, if the third party individual contacts RMIT University directly, RMIT University can then discuss select administrative matters with the third party.
Third party consent arrangements last for 12 months.
If a student wants to extend their third party consent arrangement beyond 12 months, they must apply for third party consent again.
To apply for a third party consent arrangement, the student must complete and submit the Third Party Consent Online Form (you may need to log in using your RMIT ID and password to access the form).
In instances where a student is under the age of 18, a third party consent arrangement is not required, as the parent/guardian/caregiver of an underage student is automatically permitted to contact RMIT University regarding administrative matters. RMIT will also send administrative communications to the student and their parent/guardian/caregiver, until the student turns 18.
For more information, please visit the Under 18 students webpage.
If you are a student aged under 18 or the parent/guardian/caregiver of an underage student, please contact the Under 18 Support team for general information or assistance.
If you are a third-party and the student you are representing is unable to give their consent, please submit an enquiry to Student Welfare (log in as a guest).
