Overview

People analytics (or human resource or workforce analytics) are practices relying on the analysis of complex data on people, processes, performance, or markets, that are used to support organisational decision-making.

This field has been enabled and expanded by the digitalisation of big data and the growth of AI. It allows people management professionals to move beyond historical HR metrics, benchmarking and labour market analysis. People analytics generates new insights from existing data though the use of descriptive, visual, predictive and narrative analytical techniques.

Through the Graduate Certificate in People Analytics, you will develop a deep, practical grasp of the challenges of managing people and organisations in a changing and complex world, marking yourself as highly valued strategic advisor.

Specifically, and drawing on rigorous, current theory, you will build your skills to plan, attract, develop, retain and reward a workforce. Based on evidence about work, workers, industry and context, you will build competence in various quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques. You will be enabled to generate insights and shape recommendations for action, within a strong ethical and professional framework.

Learning at RMIT

The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.

Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.

This graduate certificate will connect you to industry professionals through guest lectures, cases studies, discussions, podcasts, and more, to develop your knowledge and real-world application of people analytics.

You will leverage your learning from world-leading academics and industry professionals operating across a range of industries and organisational settings to develop new insights into the ethical and strategic use of people analytics for organisations.

You will have the opportunity to engage in robust and informative discussions with industry professionals on how they effectively use people analytics to inform strategic management decision making to benefit key stakeholders such as employees, managers and organisations.

The knowledge and skills you will acquire throughout this degree and how they can be applied in your career are described in the learning outcomes.

The Graduate Certificate has been designed by senior academics in the field of HRM, HR Analytics, and data analytics, who have researched, taught and published extensively in their areas of expertise. You will be taught by academics who are leaders in their fields.

Over one or more semesters, depending on your study load, you will complete four subjects: Foundations of People AnalyticsBusiness AnalyticsPeople and Organization and Professional Human Resource Management Practices.

Foundations of People Analytics

The use of predictive statistics and machine learning is transforming how we manage people in organisations. In this subject you will analyse the context, opportunities, methods, risks, and ethical challenges that this transformation presents. You will learn how different analytic strategies, qualitative and more frequently quantitative, can inform decision making on various dimensions of people management, including recruitment, retention, performance, voice and equity. You will be able to explain the value of people analytics in delivering mutual gains for employees, organisations, and their stakeholders.

Business Analytics

This subject introduces you to the concepts, fundamentals and tools of business analytics. You will critically examine how data can be used to drive decision-making through statistical and quantitative analysis, explanatory and predictive modelling and fact-based management. You will also develop, evaluate and analyse core analytic techniques and skills that are frequently applied in business.

People and Organization

In this subject you will explore human behaviour in a work context by considering the interaction between the people, individuals and teams, within and toward organisations. You will develop your abilities to evaluate individuals in relation to employee motivations, engagement, influence, power, well-being, and ethics, as well as issues of cross-cultural collaboration, conflict management, negotiation and communication within teams. The study of individuals and teams provide insights into the complex issues of organisational structure, culture, politics and performance management. This multi-level exploration will enable you to apply theory to contemporary issues, practices and systems to inform human resource management and organisational performance.

Professional Human Resource Management Practices

This subject examines human resource management practices from employee and employer perspectives. You will learn what an effective HR practitioner has in their professional toolkit, and how a professional develops over time. You will apply and evaluate a selected group of skills to contribute to your development as a reflective practitioner.  You will explore some of the behaviours and skills frameworks around the world that describe expert practitioners: being able to make informed decisions, communicate effectively, maintain personal credibility, and be able to be curious, culturally aware, ethical, collaborative, decisive, and focused on results.
