Notice of elections 2024

RMIT Council

RMIT Council is the governing body of the University; its responsibilities are set out within the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology Act 2010 and include oversight and review of the management, performance and corporate activities of the University.   • Elected staff member of RMIT Council
  • Elected student member of RMIT Council

The elected staff term of appointment is for a three-year period commencing 1 November 2024 and concluding 31 October 2027.

The elected student of appointment is for a one-year period commencing 1 November 2024 and concluding 31 October 2025.

All eligible persons may self-nominate by completing the online nomination form.

Staff elected position:

To be eligible for the staff elected position, a person must:

  • Be employed at .5 FTE or above
  • Not be casually employed
  • Have held that appointment for a period of more than 12 months
  • The substantive position must be held in Australia
  • Not be a director of another educational institution
  • Satisfy the fit and proper person requirements specified by TEQSA
  • Provide a statement that the candidate will, during the election period, and if successful, during the term on Council, comply with the requirements of the RMIT Act 2010, the University’s statute, regulations and policies and the Council Charter and will complete governance training as determined by Council.

Student elected position:

To be eligible for the student elected position, a person must:

  • Be enrolled as a student of RMIT University for the duration of the term of appointment and maintain an enrolment load of at least 0.5 EFTSL, or hold a university approved absence for a student leadership role;  
  • Have maintained an enrolment load of at least 0.5 EFTSL over the year preceding the term of office, or hold a university approved absence for a student leadership role;
  • Must be enrolled in a Coursework or Higher Degree by Research award offered by the University;            
  • Be located in Australia; 
  • Not be a director of another educational institution; 
  • Satisfy the fit and proper person requirements specified by TEQSA
  • Provide a statement that the candidate will, during the election period, and if successful, during the term on Council, comply with the requirements of the RMIT Act 2010, the University’s statute, regulations and policies and the Council Charter and will complete governance training as determined by Council.

Completed nomination forms must be received by the Returning Officer no later than 12 noon on the 26 September 2024.

Academic Board and Standing Committees

The Academic Board is the principal academic governing body responsible for oversight of RMIT's academic affairs across the RMIT Group. The Academic Board has established four standing committees that provide advice and support to the Board: 

  • Programs Committee 
  • Higher Education Committee  
  • Vocational Education Committee 
  • Research Committee 
  • Graduate Research Committee

Academic Board

  • one (1) member elected by and from the postgraduate students of the University
  • one (1) member elected by and from the higher degree by research students of the University
  • two (2) members elected by and from the undergraduate students of the University
  • two (2) members elected by and from the students enrolled in VE or associate degree programs of the University
  • two (2) members elected by and from the professional staff
  • five (5) members elected by and from the academic staff
  • five (5) members elected by and from the teaching staff

Programs Committee

  • One (1) student enrolled in a Higher Education program, elected by and from the Higher Education students of the College of Business and Law
  • One (1) student enrolled in a Higher Education program, elected by and from the Higher Education students of the College of Design and Social Context
  • One (1) student enrolled in a Higher Education program, elected by and from the Higher Education students of STEM College

Higher Education Committee

  • One (1) student enrolled in a Higher Education program, elected by and from the Higher Education students of the College of Business and Law
  • One (1) student enrolled in a Higher Education program, elected by and from the Higher Education students of the College of Design and Social Context
  • One (1) student enrolled in a Higher Education program, elected by and from the Higher Education students of STEM College

Vocational Education Committee

  • Three (3) students enrolled in a Vocational Education program, elected by and from the Vocational Education students of the College of Vocational Education

Research Committee

  • One (1) student enrolled in a Higher Degree by Research program, elected by and from the Higher Degree by Research candidates of the College of Business and Law
  • One (1) student enrolled in a Higher Degree by Research program, elected by and from the Higher Degree by Research candidates of the College of Design and Social Context
  • One (1) student enrolled in a Higher Degree by Research program, elected by and from the Higher Degree by Research candidates of STEM College

Graduate Research Committee

  • Higher degree by research candidates of the University, at either Masters or Doctoral levels, one each from enrolling schools across the three Colleges (College of Business and Law)
  • Higher degree by research candidates of the University, at either Masters or Doctoral levels, one each from enrolling schools across the three Colleges (College of Design and Social Context)
  • Higher degree by research candidates of the University, at either Masters or Doctoral levels, one each from enrolling schools across the three Colleges (STEM College)

The elected staff term of appointment is for a two-year period commencing 1 January 2025 and concluding 31 December 2026.

The elected student term is for a one-year period commencing 1 January 2025 and concluding 31 December 2025.

Staff elected positions:

  • Academic staff means those higher education employees of the University within the meaning of the collective agreement or award that applies to Higher Education employees, appointed to an established position and being not less than 0.5 of a full-time position.  
  • Teaching staff means those VE employees of the University within the meaning of the collective agreement or award that applies to VE employees appointed to an established position and being not less than 0.5 of a full-time position.  
  • Professional staff means those professional, administrative, clerical, computing and technical employees of the University within the meaning of the applicable collective agreement or award appointed to an established position and being not less than 0.5 of a full-time position.
  • Employees occupying Executive Level 1, Head of School, Dean and Director positions are not precluded from nominating for the academic staff and teaching staff positions.

Student elected positions:

  • Enrolled as a student of RMIT University for the duration of the term of appointment

1. Call for nominations

Nominations for the Council, Academic Board and Standing Committee elections will open on 16 September 2024 and close on 26 September 2024. 

Late nominations will not be accepted after the close of nomination period.

2. How to Nominate

Candidates may self-nominate by completing and submitting the online nomination form before the close of nominations.

3. Withdrawal of Nomination

A nominee may, no later than two (2) business days following the close of nominations withdraw their nomination by notice in writing to the Returning Officer via elections@rmit.edu.au.

4. Contested Election

In the event of a contested election an electronic ballot will be conducted from 7 October to 14 October 2024.
