Singapore Business Internship

This elective is for Singapore students who are seeking opportunities in the workplace relevant to their discipline of study.

What does this unit involve?

This unit is an elective (BUSM4711) for students who want to find their own Industry Placement opportunity through the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program. Students are required to find a placement that is related to their field of study, and will undertake this under the guidance of a workplace mentor and with the support of academic and professional University Staff.

How many hours am I expected to do?

The total amount of time at the workplace is approximately 120 hours for BUSM4711, which is 1-2 days per week for 8-12 weeks. Additionally, students are expected to complete a further 20 hours on the assessments involved in this course.

You also have the option to undertake 240 hours through the BUSM4712 elective and to receive 24 credit points. You will find more information on this elective via the Assessment and coursework tab found on this page.

When can I undertake a placement?

Students in their penultimate or final semester can enrol into this elective course.

You can commence your placement once you have enrolled in the course and have worked through the administrative steps listed on the following pages. This includes having your placement approved by the Course Coordinator and ensuring the WIL Agreement has been completed.

The next intake will be for Semester 2, 2024 (term 2460). Internship hours must be completed within the Semester dates: 1 July to 2 November 2024.

What will I learn from this unit?

You will:

  1. Develop work-ready skills to assist you in preparing for internship applications, such as:

    • preparing a suitable curriculum vitae

    • successfully attending workplace interviews

    • meeting work requirements of regarding punctuality, appropriate workplace behaviour, respectful communications and expectations of quality work outcomes

  2. Apply your business major theory into workplace practice, through a supervised experiential learning in a workplace environment

  3. Participate effectively as a workplace team member through individual and group tasks

  4. Undertake reflective praxis in reviewing the value of work experience linked to the major area of business study.

2. Source your own placement relevant to your degree

Once you have secured a placement, confirm all specific details such as Host Organisation name and address, supervisor contact details, placement dates, location of the placement, negotiated days and hours, key tasks and responsibilities you will be undertaking. This information is critical to complete the RMIT WIL Agreement.

3. Apply to enrol in the Singapore Business Internship module (BUSM4711 or BUSM4712)

  • You will need to provide an official position description which outlines the key tasks and responsibilities you will be undertaking during the internship.  The position description also should clearly state the total number of days or hours you will be interning for.

  • To have your position description reviewed by the Course Coordinator and approved for enrolment, download and complete the student questionnaire below and return this together with your position description when you lodge the online application form via the SIM Internship Approval Form

4. Complete and sign the RMIT WIL Relationship Agreement

  • Using the details of your placement complete the WIL Agreement Schedule

  • Request your host organisation sign the WIL Agreement and attach your schedule for their reference.

  • Send the signed agreement to Business Connect, selecting the Study & Work option.

  • Once you have been sent the final and complete version of your WIL Agreement, keep a copy for yourself and give a copy to your employer/supervisor.

Details: Discussion board posts, Four (4) Discussion board posts, choice of 6 topics 2 posts(7%) and 2 replies(3%) each required (Totalling 20%)

The objective of this task is to share a description of the major work-based projects on which you have been working during the internship and to communicate with fellow students’ information about: 

  • The nature of the project/s (objectives, measurement, construction etc); 
  • how discipline specific knowledge is employed I your internship 
  • your observations and insights (surprises/disappointments/challenges)

To qualify for the Singapore Business Internship you must: 

  • Be enrolled at Singapore Institute of Management.
  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of Singapore.  International students are not eligible. 
  • Have an elective available in your program of study.

Any professional role in line with your academic study path eg Financial Assistant, Marketing Officer, Logistics co-ordinator, junior accountant etc.

Yes, provided it is relevant to your study path. Please submit an enquiry to RMIT Connect, select Work and Study Opportunities, and attach your position description for approval.

The internship hours must be taken between the semester dates 1. (e.g. for Sem 1 2024 internships should take place between 4 January and 7 May, for Sem 2 2024 internships should take place between 1 July and 2 November 2024.).

The actual length of the internship will be arranged between you and your employer, and so will vary from student to student.  As an example to gain 120 hours work experience you might work 1-2 days per week for 8-12 weeks.

The internship hours (120 or 240) must be taken between the semester dates (e.g. for Sem 1 the internship dates are 3 January to 7 May 2024). 

You can commence a job prior to the start of semester and/or finish a job after the semester end date. however, any additional work hours completed outside of the official semester dates is a private arrangement between yourself and the employer. For example if you have been employed on a six (6) month contract, starting 3 January and concluding at the end with the financial year on 30 June, any work hours completed between the date semester ends ie, 7 May through to 30 June will not be counted towards your internship.

Please keep in mind that if you are completing extra work hours you must be able to balance this with your studies.

You need to provide the Internship Application Form – Student Questionnaire and a Position Description (PD) or official letter of offer/employment contract to the Team for approval. You, your employer and RMIT will all sign a WIL agreement document which states the dates and times of your placement.  This must also be approved by SIM.

Monday 13 May 2024 is the last day to let our team know that you have secured an internship.

Yes.  As long as you have an elective available you can apply for the Business Internship.

No. You do not have to complete a Business Internship to complete your degree, it is your choice if you have an elective free.

You will receive a grade for the internship elective.

You will not be able to enrol for an internship if you do not have any electives remaining to complete. However, you can do an internship not-for-credit. This will not be monitored by RMIT.

Yes, you will pay fees for this internship course as you would for any other course.

You may check your enrolment info on SIMConnect or myRMIT. It will state the exemptions you have received and how many electives you will need to complete, if any.

We will have resources to assist you, but you will need to search for an internship on your own.

You will need electives remaining to enroll for an internship. You can consider declining one of the credit transfer/exemption you have received to sign up for an internship. Please contact singapore@rmit.edu.au if you require further information/assistance on this.

Students may only complete one of the business internship course per semester.  If you wish to complete both internship courses you may do this in different semesters provided you have enough electives.  You must have a different role for each internship, although this may be with the same company, provided the duties are significantly different.

Once we have received all the appropriate documents we endeavour to give student an outcome within 5 business days.  However at times when we have a large volume of enquiries this may take longer.
