The group brings together researchers in telecommunications, networking, public policy, security and application design.

Research and development

Research and development into the next generation Internet architecture provides an important opportunity to shape the future of the digital world and to enhance our daily lives. Improving digital inclusion is a key goal of the Research Group and research is being carried out to identify new and innovative technologies and methods to improve the operation and efficiency of the Internet. Tackling cyber-security, reducing latency, improving traffic flow control and management, reducing bottlenecks and enhancing business efficiency are central to the work being carried out.

Our infrastructure and facilities

The Research Group has access to leading edge infrastructure and systems from major vendors that has been installed in a bespoke facility that supports research and development. The hardware includes GPON, HFC, 4G, provider edge and customer routers and Software Defined Networking enabled switches. Software platforms include 5G cloud native core, multi-access edge computing, cloud fabrics, cloud virtualization, network control and management, containers, hypervisor, protocol design and analysis tools.

Research areas

Network Protocols

Border Gateway Protocol, network edge protocols, focussing on techniques that include resource allocation and network slicing.

Design and Performance

Network design techniques and performance measures, focussing on a new platform for network design and real-time performance monitoring and measurement.

Security

Security at the network edge including multi-access edge computing, vehicular networking, handover techniques, infrastructure security.

Telecommunications Policy

Active participation in the public policy debate about legislation and regulation for the telecommunications market.
