Overview

The Certificate IV in Cyber Security provides in-depth learning into protecting organisations from data breaches.

As a student of this certificate, you will learn to use a range of tools and procedures to mitigate cyber security threats, and how to minimise network vulnerabilities to meet the growing needs of industry.

Through your studies you will develop knowledge and skills in the cyber security industry, and learn to:

  • monitor the risk of cyber security attacks
  • implement appropriate defenses
  • use a range of tools and procedures to mitigate cyber security threats
  • protect organisations from insider security breaches
  • develop systems to minimuse network vulnerabilities.

This training is delivered with Victorian and Commonwealth Government funding.

Learning and teaching

You will be actively involved in the learning process and the application of the learning content in the classroom, tutorials and labs.

Learning activities include presentations, group discussions, portfolio development and working collaboratively on practical activities. You will further develop skills and knowledge through access to industry events, guest speakers and facilitators’ guidance and feedback.

Assessment methods

Assessment in this certificate consists of a range of methods including projects, assignments, teamwork, role-plays and knowledge tests.  

Learning at RMIT

The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.

Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.

As a student in this certificate, you will learn to solve problems and become connected to the cybersecurity industry through opportunities to visit industry conferences and hear from guest speakers.

You will be given an opportunity to complete a variety of Work Integrated Learning (WIL) simulated workplace activities throughout the curriculum in the networking and cyber security operations labs, using industry-standard equipment.

The knowledge and skills you will acquire throughout this certificate and how they can be applied in your career are described in the learning outcomes.

As a full time student in this certificate you can expect to undertake 20 hours of structured learning per week, plus additional study time. 

The Certificate IV in Cyber Security is made up of 8 core subjects and 8 electives across two semesters of full-time study.

In your first semester you will develop fundamental skills in network and cyber security concepts and procedures. You will also explore cyber security legislation, privacy and ethical practices within security infrastructure, and introductory scripting.  

In your second semester you will tackle more complex challenges. You will learn to analyse and present research information, design and implement security perimeters, expose website security vulnerabilities, configure cloud services, and carry out a semester-long cyber security industry project.

There are no minimum academic entry requirements. Applicants must meet the minimum university entry requirements.

Entry into this qualification is competitive. Eligible applicants are ranked and selected in order of merit based on their academic achievement plus any adjustment factors.

We will consider your entire academic record to determine your eligibility for entry. The highest level of education you have previously completed will usually determine how you are ranked. 

Applicants are advised to upload evidence of any complete or partially completed qualification(s) along with an official transcript of results. 

There are no prerequisite subjects required for entry into this qualification.

A selection task is not required for entry into this qualification.

You must meet the University's minimum English language requirements to be eligible for a place in this program.

  • 2025 government subsidised place: AU$7,500* per annum
  • 2025 full-fee place: AU$13,000* per annum

Eligibility Exemption criteria

**The Victorian Government is currently waiving three (3) eligibility criteria around prior qualifications. This means that more people who want to study a vocational education program at RMIT, and who have studied previously, will be able to access a government subsidised place in a program. Find out how to check your eligibility

Payments and refunds

In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.

The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2025 is $365.

You may also be required to purchase other items related to your course, including field trips, textbooks and equipment. These additional fees and expenses vary from course to course.

You may be entitled to apply for a fee concession or exemption if you are in a Victorian Government subsidised place and you meet the eligibility criteria.

If your application for a fee concession is approved, you will be charged 20% of the standard government subsidised tuition fee for your program. You will also be charged a lower rate on your student services and amenities fee (SSAF).
