Urban Futures Symposium

The College of Design and Social Context will present the Urban Futures Symposium during 21-25 August, bringing together research students, industry and academic expertise for an exciting week of research presentations and conversations exploring the theme of Urban Futures in Transition.

The Urban Futures Symposium is centred around the scholarship of Higher Degree by Research candidates presenting on topics that stretch from the construction of new buildings to the protection of urban heritage, and across contexts from Melbourne to Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Bangladesh and Iran.

Seven plenary sessions will also be held, including keynotes by Professor Rob Raven, a renowned urban transitions researcher, and Indy Johar, co-founder of 00 and Dark Matter Labs.

Topics addressed across the week will include socio-technical transitions and urban experimentation, working with urban communities, innovations in spatial data and AI, applying digital methods to urban futures, and approaches for transitioning to a low carbon housing future.

PhDs Talking Transport with Industry will see RMIT scholars and recent graduates exploring the challenges of urban transport in discussion with Dr Taru Jain, Manager of Research, Department of Transport and Planning, Victoria State Government, and Richard Smithers, Manager Transport Strategy for the City of Melbourne.

All are welcome to join us for these events. We look forward to seeing you at RMIT's City Campus or online.
