RMIT University and Navantia Australia drive maritime innovation

RMIT University and Navantia Australia have strengthened their collaborative relationship, deepening the connection between academia and Australia’s growing maritime sector.

Working closely with Navantia Spain’s cutting-edge DeepTech unit Monodon, RMIT and Navantia Australia will foster joint projects, realise research initiatives and explore new opportunities, with the goal of advancing innovation and research in maritime engineering and national security.

This announcement builds on established scholarship and research programs that explore, assess and facilitate engineering solutions to respond to sector needs.

Among the initial five projects identified in this cooperation, three PhD programs will be developed through the CSIRO/Data 61 Next Generation Graduate Program and endorsed and co-sponsored by the Australian Defence Science Institute, with a focus on cutting-edge hydrodynamics and autonomous vessel technologies.

RMIT and Monodon also collaborate on two postdoctoral research projects related to photonics, with applications for advanced communication technologies, through the Australia-Spain Network for Innovation and Research Excellence (AuSpire) program, coordinated by RMIT Europe

Distinguished Professor Calum Drummond, Deputy Vice Chancellor Research and Innovation at RMIT, said the University was excited to be strengthening its relationship with Navantia Australia and Monodon.

“This collaboration opens up incredible opportunities for our researchers and students, and further positions RMIT as a leader in the maritime and defence innovation sectors,” Drummond said.

Israel Lozano, Managing Director of Navantia Australia said growing partnerships within the Australian higher education sector demonstrated Navantia’s commitment to research collaboration, particularly with RMIT.

“Our collaboration with RMIT is part of our strategy to expand our innovation capabilities in Australia and follows on from the announcement made during Indo Pacific 2023,” said Lozano.

“We are looking forward to building on this relationship to advance cutting-edge technologies and ensure Australia’s maritime sector remains at the forefront of global innovation.”

Marta Fernandez, Executive Director at RMIT Europe, said she was pleased to see the commitment for further collaboration between RMIT and Navantia.

“RMIT's presence in Spain has supported the growth of the partnership not only by connecting with central research and innovation teams but also engaging with Navantia’s strategic academic partners in Spain for research and student mobility,” said Fernandez.

RMIT and Navantia Australia are committed to building a robust and sustainable partnership that will continue to drive technological advancement in Australia’s defence and maritime sectors and are also collaborators in the Additive Manufacturing Cooperative Research Centre program.

An annual joint event between Navantia Australia and its academic partners across Australia will help further promote collaboration, share knowledge, and foster synergies within the industry.
