RMIT students to compete at WorldSkills International Championships in France

Four RMIT students will represent Australia at an international vocational education competition in France in September.

Randy Gunawan, Disha Anchan, Oisin Aeonn and Gervase Voss will join the Skillaroos at the WorldSkills International Competition in Lyon.

They were selected after an intensive two-year process and will join Australia’s largest ever contingent, with team members competing across bricklaying, cyber security, cookery, plumbing and heating, and fashion technology.

Additive manufacturing competitor Gervase Voss said WorldSkills provided an opportunity to develop his skills beyond the classroom.

“From a young age I’ve been obsessed with engineering concepts, so to pursue a career in an industry that I’m passionate about felt natural,” he said.

WorldSkills has been held since 1950 and celebrates the unique skillset of apprentices and trainees. More than 1,500 competitors from 86 countries are expected to compete this year.

Mish Eastman, RMIT Deputy Vice-Chancellor Vocational Education and Vice-President, said the Skillaroos were a testament to the opportunities in vocational education.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for our RMIT students competing on the international stage to connect with the Skillaroos team and celebrate this pivotal moment in their skills journey together,” she said.

“I know these exceptional students will hugely benefit from this once-in-a-lifetime experience as they work towards taking up in-demand jobs that support the Australian economy.”

The uniform features a design by Worimi woman and Indigenous artist Jacinta-Rai Ridgeway-Maahs, spotlighting national flora and fauna.

“I love to tell stories through my art and create pieces that people can connect with, so I’m incredibly honoured to be given this opportunity,” she said.
