Student intern shines at Meals with Impact

Bachelor of Business (Marketing) student Ciara Binion reflects on her experience at Meals with Impact, which has seen her rise from Intern to Customer Experience and Marketing Officer.

Meals with Impact is a not-for-profit, work-integrated social enterprise that supports women from migrant and refugee backgrounds find sustainable employment through the co-creation of food.

Ciara, who will graduate in December, secured an internship with the organisation earlier this year, allowing her to put her passion for marketing to the test in a professional setting.

During her internship, Ciara worked on a wide range of marketing projects including marketing and brand strategy, content creation and email and influencer marketing.

She also worked closely with the migrant and refugee women, who are chefs and café all-rounders, to tell their stories and highlight the successes of the women as well as the barriers and hinderances to employment for refugee women in Australia.

“The opportunity to partner with an organisation as incredible and meaningful as Meals with Impact was the greatest highlight,” she said.

I’m so grateful that I could develop my skills in an environment where people are working every day to create tangible change in our community.

Ciara was tasked with a range of projects which helped teach her how to effectively balance storytelling and fact-telling through marketing strategies.

“Working on social media campaigns with some of the trainees was so much fun and gave me incredible insight into the lives of refugee and migrant women,” she said.

“I was also able to kick-start an influencer marketing campaign, working alongside some previous Masterchef contestants to promote Meals with Impact’s ready-meals range.”

After being offered a position with Meals with Impact post-internship, Ciara emphasises the importance of being prepared to embark on an internship.

"I can’t stress the importance of starting your internships early.”

“Competition can be tough in third year, so please don’t wait until you’ve almost graduated to take on an internship."

"Balancing work and studies can be challenging, but as long as you stay organised, you’ll do great!"

Ciara encourages students to consider interning with social enterprises or charities.

"Not only are you making a difference with the support you’re providing, but you’re also able to truly witness the direct impact and outcomes of your work."

Meals with Impact Chief Operating Officer Rachael Hua, praised Ciara on her attitude to the internship.

"From day one Ciara jumped in with enthusiasm and dedication, bringing a positive attitude and willingness to learn and adapt.”
