Information retrieval and web search

This project is concerned with the design, implementation and application of efficient algorithms and data structures for effective information storage and retrieval systems.

We analyse and develop algorithms for processing information represented in numeric, text, image, audio, and video data.

The discipline encompasses the study of many applications that use these algorithms including file systems, database systems, search engines and the World Wide Web.

In the last five years, the group has received over $1 million in grant income and published over 100 conference papers, as well as 35 journal papers.

Many of our research publications are highly cited, and members of the group have recently received:

  • Best Paper Award at the 2008 Australian Computer Science Conference
  • Best Paper at the Fifth Asian Information Retrieval Symposium 2009
  • Best Student Paper award at one of the IEEE's premier software engineering conferences (COMPSAC 2009) for research in the changing coding styles over time
