Innovative and inspiring: RMIT students celebrated at the DECJUBA Awards for Marketing

RMIT students were recognised at the inaugural DECJUBA Awards for Marketing, which recognise marketing students for their academic achievements and commitment to improving marketing practice as a future business leader.

Three RMIT students were recognised at the inaugural DECJUBA Awards for Marketing, which recognise marketing students for their academic achievements and commitment to improving marketing practice as a future business leader.  

Third year student Cybil Ybanez took out the award for Marketing Innovation, for her concept on tackling clothing waste and encouraging re-use. 

Ybanez presented her idea for a new product range called ‘wear me down’, featuring long-lasting clothes designed for timeless wear that change over time, and seasonal second-hand market drive where customers are incentivised to exchange their pre-loved items for a voucher.

Her idea was based on an idea she had seen where shoes changed colour and pattern over wear.

“I brainstormed how this idea could be replicated in clothes and proposed DECJUBA produce an innovative product line where the more a customer utilises the product, a new design emerges.”

“A basic skirt starts with one colour, but as more washes are conducted colour from the bottom will slowly fade away creating an ombre finish.”

Ybanez said her main takeaway from her experience is to not be afraid to step out of her comfort zone.  

“By throwing myself out there and sharing my creativity, I was given the honour to receive the DECJUBA Award for Marketing Innovation. This award will encourage me to constantly find new outlets to develop my innovativeness which I will utilise in my marketing career.”

Sian Hendry received the award for Women in Marketing saying to be recognised for achievement by leaders in the industry is both empowering and humbling.  

“I am so grateful to the DECJUBA Foundation for their contribution to the continued development of our industry and I look forward to the next stage of my career”. 

The final award for Marketing and Digital Entrepreneurship was awarded to third year student Alex Nairn in recognition of her success with the two businesses she launched during her time at RMIT: Moose Cow Fish and Raf’s Mane Miracle.  

The 2022 awards were the first in what is a three-year partnership with the DECJUBA Foundation, representing a $45,000 investment.  

DECJUBA Foundation General Manager Gill Whelan said the awards are an opportunity to support and inspire students interested in retail marketing. 

“We are so excited to launch the inaugural DECJUBA Foundation Marketing Awards. Recognising innovation, women in marketing and digital entrepreneurship, the awards are an opportunity to support up and coming talent and to promote retail as a career.  

The awards are part of a broader partnership that includes DECJUBA x RMIT D:GROW Retail Management program, a leadership program designed to build career pathway for retail leaders. 

The DECJUBA Awards for Marketing are supported by the DECJUBA Foundation and are available to current undergraduate students studying Marketing, Marketing Innovation and Digital Entrepreneurship, as well as postgraduate Marketing students.
