Symposium examines creative practice in the Asia-Pacific region

RMIT and LASALLE College of the Arts have co-hosted the Imaging Pasts and Futures: Creative Digital Practices in the Arts symposium in Singapore.

The two-day brought together artists, designers, academics, creatives, key thought-leaders and practitioners.

Through a series of panel discussions and keynote presentations the symposium examined how new technologies are being used by artists, designers and creative practitioners to interpret and transform knowledge systems and cultural narratives.

Keynotes were delivered by Dr Christian Thompson AO, Artist and RMIT Adjunct Industry Associate Professor, and 伍韶勁 Kingsley Ng, Artist and Associate Professor at the Academy of Visual Arts of Hong Kong Baptist University.

The symposium also featured presentations from researchers and artists from across the region including Singapore, Australia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Philippines, Cambodia, China and Indonesia.

Associate Professor Kristen Sharp, Associate Dean, Art, was part of the organising team and said the symposium was extremely successful.

“It was wonderful working with our colleagues at LASALLE to curate the symposium and gather such an inspiring line up of presenters,” she said.

“The knowledge exchange, sharing of research and experimental practice was an invaluable opportunity for all involved, helping form new relationships and opportunities for future collaboration.”

The initiative was supported by RMIT’s International & Engagement portfolio and builds on the key pillars of RMIT’s Singapore Country Commitment

Launched earlier this year, the Country Commitment reaffirms the University’s long-term intent and determination to address shared challenges and opportunities with Singapore.

It focusses on the strength of partnerships, existing collaborations and recognises opportunities to deliver mutual impact in addressing regional and global challenges.

RMIT’s three-decade partnership with LASALLE and activities like this symposium are evidence of our many successful collaborations in Singapore and the role RMIT can play in connecting our network to the wider region.

Imaging Pasts and Futures: Creative Digital Practices in the Arts symposium was curated by Associate Professor Kristen Sharp, Dr Tammy Wong Hulbert and Dr Alison Bennett from our School of Art alongside colleagues from LASALLE College of the Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Media & Creative Industries.
