Max undertook a semester exchange to Rikkyo University in Tokyo, Japan, through the Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship. He writes:

I undertook a semester exchange to Rikkyo University in Tokyo, Japan, with the support of the Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship. Seeking to expand my international perspective beyond RMIT, I discovered the scholarship through the RMIT network and felt incredibly fortunate to become a recipient.

Not only did it fund my studies abroad, but it also provided leadership experiences and access to a network of inspiring scholars from previous years.

The application process was relatively straightforward, involving an initial application and a one-way video interview. The biggest hurdle, honestly, was just hitting “submit” on the application. Taking that first step can feel daunting, but it instantly boosts your chances.

When the reward is a fully funded semester abroad, the few hours spent writing and preparing responses are more than worth it.

The real challenge, I found, was clearly articulating how my goals aligned with the scholarship’s focus on the APAC region.

At Rikkyo, I took International Business courses that explored Asia-Pacific trade dynamics and cultural insights, as well as immersive Japanese language classes. Studying business from a Japanese perspective was eye-opening—it helped me understand the region’s economy and how culture plays a big role in professional life. Practicing Japanese daily, with support from friends, was challenging but incredibly rewarding.

Arriving in Japan was a mix of excitement and awe. Tokyo’s vibrant energy and rich culture were unlike anything I’d experienced, and while adjusting to a new language and city was challenging at first, it quickly turned to fascination. Some of my best memories include hiking Mount Fuji, exploring the countryside, and joining traditional festivals—all made even better by the friends I made along the way.

For anyone thinking about the Westpac Scholarship or studying abroad, I’d say: dive in! Research how your passions align with your host country and embrace the local culture fully.

This scholarship has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that allowed me to grow both academically and personally, and the connections I’ve made will last a lifetime. Step out of your comfort zone—you never know what might come from it.
