Vincent recently landed a new role as a Statutory Planner at Moyne Shire Council. He reflects on his job search journey:

I was a full-time student at RMIT University, studying Building Design at the Melbourne City campus. English is my second language, which presented challenges during my job search and application process.

Although I submitted several job applications, I encountered difficulties in receiving responses to them. As such, I decided to seek guidance from career consultants to enhance my resume and interview skills.

The Careers Consultant helped me prepare questions in advance and provided insightful advice that that greatly contributed to the success of the interview.

The interview preparation session not only boosted my interview skills but also provided invaluable guidance that directly contributed to securing my current job. For instance, during the online interview, I kept in mind the Careers Consultant's advice to maintain eye contact with the camera, which greatly enhanced my presentation. Additionally, I learned the importance of preparing answers to expected questions in advance, ensuring I was well-prepared.

I strongly believe that interviews demand specific preparation skills. Success isn't solely about being suitable for the position; it's about honing these skills to effectively present yourself. This is why career consultations are essential for students—they equip them with the essential skills and confidence to excel in interviews.

Don't be afraid of failure in your job hunt. Securing a job isn't always easy. Be prepared and don't feel discouraged if you face setbacks along the way.

Sometimes, even if you don’t get the result you want, that experience can be a stepping stone to another, better position. Sometimes, the hiring manager will contact you again when they have another opportunity pop up. Keep persevering and actively seeking—you'll discover the right fit.
