Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) play a key role in communication and consultation on health and safety issues in the workplace.
They represent the views of staff in Designated Work Groups (DWGs) [link] in formal discussions with management and can help resolve local health and safety issues.
HSRs are elected by members of their Designated Work Group. Deputy HSRs may also be elected to support the HSR and cover the HSR’s duties when necessary.
In Victoria, Australia, the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 enables an HSR to raise issues that require resolution with management. It also provides them with a mechanism to take unresolved issues further, where needed.
Read about the role of HSRs on the Health, Safety and Wellbeing Community SharePoint (staff only – login required).
