Michele Meister grew up in Switzerland (Lausanne) and Germany. She started her studies in Graphic Designs, before completing her Fine Arts Degree at the FIU in Hamburg, Germany. She lived in Santorini, Greece for 14 years, where she first worked as a draftsperson and then had her own gallery / studio. There she created artwork, facilitated exhibitions and collaboration between artists and designers, and ran creative workshops for drawing and art. This was all done all while she explored the fine line between art and design.
In 2004, she moved to Melbourne and has since then exhibited, studied and worked in her own art practice and in interior design.
She won the 'Room by Design' for the GRAND DESIGN exhibition in Melbourne, 2013. Since 2014, she has been a full-time teacher at RMIT. Her passion in teaching is closely related to creativity and closing the gap between art and design.
In her own art and design practice, she draws, weaves, paints and creates books, while still working on her own interior design projects. Her strongest interest is in the idea and concept generation in all creative work and how this is linked to sketching and hand drawing.
2019 RMIT SIDA Fellowship:
A 2 week travel/study trip to Italy to deepen knowledge into the history and making of textiles, exploring the ‘handmade’ element in the creative field. Contrary to current societal trajectory, there is a strong belief that “our future is handmade”. This led to incorporating more handmaking elements in the curriculum, beginning with the simple act of hand sketching and encouragement to the students for the crafts.
