About

Michelle Mantsio is a lecturer, artist and designer. She is currently the Co-Ordinator of History and Theory in the Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours) program at the School of Architecture and Urban Design. Prior to this Michelle was the Co-Ordinator of Design Studios from in 2023 - 2024. Michelle has extensive higher education teaching experience in the creative fields of Art and Design.

 

Michelle’s practice is research-based. Her focus is at the intersections of body, pattern and the improvised state through multi-level assemblages. This is explored by developing contemporary art and design projects focused on how the body is implicated through spatio/temporal conditions and its impact on agency, autonomy, connection and becoming. She works within the intersection of art and design through film, installation, performance, textiles, and design.

 

Michelle is the recipient of the Banff Centre Artists Award (2017) CA; Rousseau et Vermont Endowment (2013) CA; Career Development Funding from the Copyright Agency (2013) AU; Melbourne University Travelling Scholarship (2006) AU; Celebration of Cities International Architectural Award – Region IV (2004) AU; and the National Gallery of Victoria Trustees Award (1997) AU.

 

Michelle has participated in numerous residencies, workshops and thinks tanks, including Yellow Brick Step 41 (2025) GR; Room to Create (2018 & 2020-2021) AU; Yellow Brick Step 12 (2018) GR; Body as Site (2017) CA; To Note (2015) AU; Always Lift Inkrollers ... (2013) CA; Senselab (2011) CA; Goldsmiths University of London Research Residencies (2008 & 2010) UK; and Future Academy (2006-2008) AU, JP, DE, and GR.

 

Michelle has exhibited in Australia and overseas. Most recently A Score for Surface (2025), Yellow Brick, GR; Melbourne Now (2023) National Gallery of Victoria, AU; Attention Seeker (2022), La Trobe Institute of Art, AU; Petite Miniature Textiles (2022) Wangaratta Art Gallery, AU; Far – Floor Ratio (2020) 3 137, GR; Unfinished Business (2018) ACCA, AU; Nauhaus (2019) Melbourne Design Festival, AU; Richter-Fest-2017 (2017) Science and Art Space, RU; Filmideo (2017) Index Art Center, US; Billboard Project (2015) CCP, AU; Vis Com (2014) Unitec University, CO; and Mildura Palimpsest (2013), AU. She wrote for Melbourne writing collective Stamm between 2013-2015 and is a member of research group the Kinomatics Project.
