Learning and teaching

The learning experience of this certificate is organised into five clusters, allowing you to focus intensively on each topic before moving onto the next cluster.

These clusters include:

  • Introduction to VET and Work Skill Instruction
  • Introduction to foundation skills (LLN)
  • Delivery of learning programs
  • Assessment of learning programs
  • E-Learning (Design and Assessment) for learning programs.

The Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, delivered over 12 months, offers two learning delivery options. Students can opt for face-to-face or online delivery, both of which require scheduled contact hours with your tutor and classmates in addition to self-paced learning.

The Fast-Track Intensive Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, delivered over 6 months, involves a combination of intensive face-to-face teaching workshops and online assessment support sessions.

Learning activities in both the 6 or 12 month course options include discussions, quizzes, peer presentations, small group work, online research tasks, simulations and creating workplace documents. These activities and the participant manual form a core component of the course and the relevant activities will need to be completed prior to the live session each week.

Assessment methods

Ongoing assessment throughout this certificate includes written assessments in the form of knowledge questions, case studies, presentations, peer reviews and validation. All assessments are geared towards the theoretical and practical learnings you need to become a qualified VE trainer and assessor.

Learning at RMIT

The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.

Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.

This certificate is led by highly experienced and qualified trainers who model best practice in training skills.

You will have the opportunity to practise your skills in a supportive environment, as well as applying them in workplace-based assessment projects.

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice.

The typical contact hours (class time) for each learning cluster are:

  • Introduction to VET and work skill instruction – 28 hours
  • Introduction to foundation skills (LLN) – 28 hours
  • Delivery cluster – 70 hours
  • Assessment cluster – 77 hours
  • E-learning cluster – 49 hours.

6-month intensive Certificate IV in Training and Assessment

OR

  • online delivery, which requires live online participation for two classes per week (generally after work hours), in addition to ongoing self-paced learning.

Please note: face-to-face and online options require scheduled contact hours with your tutor and classmates in addition to self-paced learning.

For each hour of class time, it is expected that students will spend an equal amount of time outside class time working on their assessment tasks, conducting independent research, reading and or any other supporting work that may be appropriate to the course being undertaken.
