In a bid to enhance student learning experience through industry and peer partnership, the School of Property, Construction and Project Management recently organised an inter-varsity event in Building Information Modelling. For a week, from 9th to 13th December 2019, 15 students from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and 15 students from RMIT University came together at the School of Property, Construction and Project Management , RMIT for 3 days of intensive BIM training and 2 days of competition.
The immersive program comprised lectures, seminars and hands-on use of BIM tools to explore algorithmic design, environmental design, 4D and 5D BIM concepts. Participants learnt theories and concepts relating to digital modelling as well as the concept of model-based environmental design, scheduling and estimating. For the competition, students worked in teams of four/five. Each team comprised a mix of students from RMIT and NUS. Using the knowledge learnt over three days, the teams worked collaboratively to generate and develop BIM designs for the NHS Office Building Project. In generating their BIM modelling, students highlighted the challenges and benefits of model-based processes, demonstrated the sustainability, cost and time implications of their design and discussed possible changes that could result from the uptake of digital technology.
After two days of intense preparation, the final day saw each team make a 20-minute presentation describing their design, simulations and cost estimations. Professor Ron Wakefield presented prizes for Overall Best Design Award (Team); Best Algorithmic Design Solution (Individual); Best Environmental Design Award (Individual); Best 4D/5D Simulation Award (Individual) and Certificates of Participation to all participants.
