Get ready to apply to RMIT

Getting ready to start your international student pathway as a Foundation Studies or English for Academic Purposes? Here are some tips to help you get ready for study and life at RMIT. 

New student enrolment and orientation

Enrolment for Foundation Studies

When: Enrolments open 28 days prior to the semester start date.
Where: The Foundation Studies enrolment guide will have all the information you need to complete your enrolment. 

Enrolment for English for Academic Purposes

When: Enrolments open on Monday two weeks prior to the course start date.
Where: Online enrolment form will be sent to your personal email account inbox. If you do not receive it, contact Student Services.

Late enrolments

The last day you can enrol is the Monday of Week 2 of classes; however, by this time classes have been finalised and places will be limited.

If you know you will be enrolling after your scheduled class start date, please contact us with details of your expected enrolment date.

Orientation

Orientation is about welcoming you to RMIT and helping you get familiar with RMIT UP and your program. Learn about our campus, how to access your learning materials, meet your teachers and support staff and find out how to meet new friends and get involved in our activities and events. 

Every program at RMIT UP has its own orientation and it is compulsory for all new students to attend. Once you have enrolled in your program, you will receive information about your orientation session. 

Your RMIT

Student number

When you enrol you will be issued a unique student number. This will be how we identify you and during your time as a student. Your student email starts with your student number similar to this example: s33etc

Student email

As an RMIT student, you will also be issued with an RMIT email address. It is very important that you monitor your RMIT email address regularly for important information. Your student email address will include your student number, eg s1234567@student.rmit.edu.au.

Canvas

Canvas is RMIT's Learning Management System (LMS). This is where you will find all of your course content. You will receive more information about Canvas, including details about how to log in, after enrolment.

English for Academic Purposes is delivered in six levels from Elementary to Advanced Plus. Each level of study takes 10 weeks, full-time to complete. Each level is delivered over two 5-week modules. New intakes occur every 5-weeks.

Prepare for your studies in Australia

Melbourne is a great place to study, work and live. Here are a few tips to help get you prepared for living in Australia. 

One of the most important things to do early in your Australian study journey is to apply for a student visa from the Australian Government.

International students holding an Australian student visa are required to maintain valid Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) with an approved provider. Find out more about Medical and health cover while you study.

RMIT UP provides a personalised study experience for you. This means you Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). We do not have classroom or public study area computers. Find out more about what type of device you will need for your studies here

What to expect on your first day of class

On your first day of class, you will meet your teachers, other students and the teams that are here to help you thrive in your new learning environment. As an RMIT UP student, you will have access to activities, events and support services throughout your studies.

What to expect in the classroom

RMIT UP provides you with access to a structured timetable and classroom activities. These will help keep you on track with your studies and keep you interacting with your classmates in an English speaking environment.

Classroom activities

In the classroom, you will participate in live discussions and group work, practice speaking and listening English with your teachers and other students, and engage in a wide variety academic activities and teaching styles.

You and your classmates will work individually and in groups to produce projects and assessments to submit for grading and feedback from your teachers. 

Teachers

Our teachers are experts in their field and highly experienced in working with international students both face-to-face in the classroom and online. They understand your needs and are skilled at delivering the best outcome for students from all around the world.

Class timetables

  • Foundation Studies students can check their timetable online.
  • English for Academic Purposes classes are held from Monday to Friday. Students will be placed in either Shift 1 or 2. Shift 1 starts at 8:30am and finishes at 1pm.  Shift 2 begins at 1pm and finishes at 5:30pm. Both shifts include a 30 minute break.

When you enrol at RMIT UP you will be invited to attend an Orientation session before your classes begin. It’s very important that you attend this session. You will hear lots of information about your study journey as well as have the opportunity to meet staff and other students.

If you miss the orientation, contact the RMIT UP Student Experience Team (link email).

Whilst you are studying in Australia it is your responsibility to ensure that your student visa is valid and that you meet all the conditions.

You can find detailed information about student visas from the Department of Home Affairs.

Yes, upon enrolment you will be advised on how to apply for your RMIT University student card. It can be used across the RMIT University campus as a form of identification, as well as getting student discounts wherever they are offered.

For security reasons, RMIT University and RMIT UP will only communicate important information to you through your RMIT student email address. It is your responsibility as a student to check this email regularly.
