Under 18s and child safety

Access essential information, resources and processes for club leaders regarding under-18 (u18) club members.

If a club member under the age of 18 joins your club you will be notified by RMIT Student Life via your club’s email. They will provide further information and guide you through the next steps.

Working with Children Checks

Every member of your leadership team must have a valid Working with Children Check. These are collected at the beginning of each year through the ‘Club Executive Contacts’ form and is a requirement for the reaffiliation of all clubs.

Volunteer Working with Children Check’s can be obtained for free via the link below.

Reading

Leadership teams and adults within each club should familiarize themselves with RMIT’s Child Safe Framework. The Child Safe Code of Conduct outlines appropriate and inappropriate behaviors when engaging with this student group.

External people attending an RMIT club

External attendees should also be provided with RMIT’s Child Safe Framework. They should know who to contact with any concerns (Safer Community) and understand how to give child-safety focused feedback. Ensure that all external locations where club activities take place have staff who hold valid Working with Children Checks.

Photos, videos, and online meetings

Please be mindful that no photos or videos should be taken of children/young people, except if there is prior written permission from parents/guardians, in line with the Child Safe Image Instruction.

Club Leaders should also consider their online learning environments, ensuring they are child safe. If online meetings are recorded, a permission form must be completed for under-18 students.

Refer to the online child safety guide to learn more.

Day excursions and overnight/multiday trips

The trip leader must hold a valid Working With Children Check. Ensure that under-18 students have their own sleeping arrangements and do not share sleeping spaces with adults.

Clubs have the right to refuse U18 members on overnights/multiday trips.
