A critical review of the literature relating to organisational culture and workplace safety was conducted.
The review considered cultural influences on workplace safety emerging from national culture, industry and organisational values and practices.
A workplace Health and Safety Culture Framework was developed. The framework comprises nine components which were each defined with detailed reference to the research literature. An organisational culture maturity continuum was developed to enable organisations to plot the development of their organisational culture in relation to the nine components.
The construction industry is complex and difficult to influence to change, however it touches the lives of many Australians and is critical to the national economy now more so than ever. The work of the RMIT team in the face of this complexity and the structural barriers to change is not only valuable but highly commendable.
