Dr. Md Safiullah (Safi) is a Senior Lecturer in Finance at RMIT University, Australia. He served as a Lecturer in Finance at La Trobe University and as an Assistant Professor in Banking at the University of Dhaka. His research expertise is in sustainable finance, gender diversity, Islamic banking and corporate governance. He is the recipient of the RMIT College of Business and Law 2023 Research Excellence (ECR) Award. He also received the RMIT School of Economics, Finance, and Marketing Award for Learning and Teaching Excellence in 2024. Additionally, he was a finalist for the student-nominated RMIT College of Business and Law Learning and Teaching Impact Award in both 2022 and 2023.
His original research appeared in 25 top-ranked peer-reviewed journals, including 5 in ABDC-A* and 20 in ABDC-A-ranked journals. He published in leading journals such as the Journal of Corporate Finance, Energy Economics, Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions & Money, International Review of Financial Analysis, International Review of Finance, among others. His research has garnered over 1,000 citations on Google Scholar from distinguished journals and researchers worldwide. He also supervises PhD students as a principal supervisor.
Safi received over $170,000 in external and internal research grants. He also published 2 articles in The Conversation and several international media pieces, and his impactful research has been featured in the mainstream media, such as Yahoo News, SBS News, The Australian Today, Hashtag, and MFIN. The ABC Radio National, ABC Radio Perth, and Eastside Radio Sydney, Australia, have also interviewed him for his comments on Australian banking. Safi's research expertise is recognized by being invited to speak internationally at academic and non-academic events.
He is an Associate Editor of Qualitative Research in Financial Markets (ABDC B-ranked), International Journal of Islamic and Middle Eastern Financial Management (ABDC B-ranked), and Islamic Scientific Review.
His teaching philosophy focuses on delivering a high-quality learning experience by integrating industry practices, modern technological tools, and research-driven approaches into his teaching and assessments. He teaches Money and Debt Markets, Frontiers in FinTech and Innovations at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
He holds a PhD in Finance from the University of Newcastle, an MSc in Corporate Governance from Birkbeck College, University of London, a BBA in Finance, and an MBA in Banking from the University of Dhaka. He is also a CPA. He stood 2nd in the combined merit list in the HSC exam in Bangladesh.
