A scientist by training, Susan made the transition from medical research to state and local government. At first, she worked as part of a team undertaking radiation tests for the government during the French atmospheric nuclear tests. Later, Susan provided quality control services for viral vaccines and undertook research into new vaccines.
Susan’s studies for the Master of Business Administration (MBA) at RMIT culminated in her thesis, ‘Benchmarking in Local Government’ being published. As a direct outcome Susan obtained $100,000 in funding to conduct a national benchmarking project in local government. A practical guide produced as part of this project enabled local government in Australia to pioneer benchmarking and make productivity improvements.
Since retirement, Susan has authored a short non-fiction work, ‘Benchmarking for Life’ that applies the principles of benchmarking as in business to personal development. Susan has drawn on her lived experiences of resilience to support the effectiveness of this approach.
