The Nature Positive Enabling Impact Network connects multidisciplinary researchers at RMIT with government and industry leaders to develop innovative solutions for sustainability and ecosystem restoration.
The Nature Positive EIN will gather more than 40 academics across colleges, schools, and centres at RMIT University, all united by the challenge of supporting businesses and government to work towards being nature positive by 2030.
This nature positive objective emerged in response to the 2020 Kunming-Montreal CoP15 and has since informed governance change including establishment of the Australian Government’s Nature Repair Market Bill 2023. Despite growing attention to the “nature positive” concept, it is unclear how it will be implemented to achieve its goals. Hence, RMIT has the opportunity to establish leadership in shaping the nature positive agenda and its successful implementation.
Experts in law, business, design, ecology, biodiversity conservation, environmental sciences, chemistry and social sciences will collaborate to tackle the fundamental objectives of the nature positive agenda. This involves both better understanding the impacts of society’s activities on nature, and how to take actions that first mitigate these impacts and then result in a net increase in nature: its diversity and its abundance.
This includes addressing pollution, better understanding the impacts of development, fast tracking the circular economy, and improving the rigour of the fast growing biodiversity credit markets. The Nature Positive EIN will also serve as a platform to connect business and government stakeholders with Nature Positive researchers at RMIT for developing impactful projects. The multidisciplinary RMIT team will constitute a comprehensive knowledge hub, driving novel approaches to achieve global nature positive goals.
The following themes reflect areas of expertise across the network.
